Crocodile is named after Kipling

A newly-discovered species of prehistoric crocodile has been named after the writer Rudyard Kipling.

The 130-million-year-old specimen, now called Goniopholis Kiplingi, was found in Swanage, Dorset, by the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site team in 2009.

It was named after The Jungle Book author in recognition for his enthusiasm for natural sciences.

Richard Edmonds, the team's earth science manager, said finds continued to show up on the eroding coastline.

The crocodile lived in a shallow lagoon covering large parts of Purbeck during the early Cretaceous period.

Its skull was loaned to Bristol University for scanning.

'Stunning specimen'

Professor Mike Benton, from the university, said: "On a damp, wintry day in Swanage, we have to imagine a world of lush tropical trees, balmy hot lagoons, and crocodiles of all sizes swimming and snapping lazily at dinosaurs on the sea shore.

"This stunning specimen shows that there's plenty of life in the Dorset Jurassic - these must be some of the most heavily collected rocks in the world, and yet it's wonderful to see a new species coming out."

The Goniopholis Kiplingi has now been published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

The specimen is presently on display at Dorset County Museum.

Mr Edmonds added: "The fossil record is far from complete although the chance of a creature such as this being fossilised is very slim.

"People will still be making new discoveries 200 years from now."

Rudyard Kipling lived from 1865 to 1936.

He is known for The Jungle Book, which has been adapted into several films, including the 1967 Disney animation.

His other works include Just So Stories and Kim, and the short story The Man Who Would Be King.

Obama Still Lying About Mother's Health Insurance Problem ...

Last summer, a brief stir was caused when a book published by New York Times reporter Janny Scott uncovered an uncomfortable fact about President Obama: He had been lying about his mother?s health insurance problems. During the 2008 campaign and throughout the subsequent debate over his signature health care legislation, the president used his mother?s experience as a cancer patient fighting to get coverage to pay for treatment for what her insurer said was a pre-existing condition as an emotional argument to sway skeptics. But as Scott discovered during the course of writing her biography of Anne Dunham, A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama?s Mother, it turned out that her correspondence showed that ?the 1995 dispute concerned a Cigna disability insurance policy and that her actual health insurer had apparently reimbursed most of her medical expenses without argument.?

At the time the White House chose not to dispute Ms. Scott?s findings. But apparently the Obama campaign thinks the public?s memory is mighty short. As Glenn Kessler writes today in the Washington Post?s Fact Checker column, the president?s much ballyhooed campaign biography film ?The Road We?ve Traveled,? narrated by Tom Hanks repeats the same line that Scott debunked. Though the film?s script tries to avoid repeating the president?s false claims from 2008, as Kessler says, any reasonable person would infer from the movie that the president?s mother died because her insurance was denied.

As Kessler notes, the filmmakers were aware of the fact that the president had been caught in a lie about his mother?s insurance but were determined to get this story into the film without exactly repeating his mendacious statement:

We think there are few viewers of this film who would watch this sequence and conclude that Dunham was involved in anything but a fight over health-insurance coverage. ? The filmmakers must have known they had a problem with this story or else they would have recounted it as Obama had done in the 2008 campaign, using phrases such as ?pre-existing conditions,? ?health insurance,? and ?treatment.?

Instead, they arranged the quotes and images to leave a misleading impression of what really happened.

President Obama?s willingness to falsify the facts about a personal tragedy in order to make a political point speaks volumes about not only his cynicism but also his character. It?s important to remember that this is no misunderstanding but rather a bald-faced lie. Here?s what Obama said during one of his debates with Republican opponent John McCain:

For my mother to die of cancer at the age of 53 and have to spend the last months of her life in the hospital room arguing with insurance companies because they?re saying that this may be a pre-existing condition and they don?t have to pay her treatment, there?s something fundamentally wrong about that.

It is true that Ms. Dunham did have a separate dispute about disability insurance but this had nothing to do with pre-existing conditions. Nor did it affect her fight for her life. And given that her son acted as her attorney, there?s no doubt he was not ignorant of the truth of the matter.

President Obama never apologized for his original lie. He just assumed, rightly it turns out, that even though this whopper was uncovered by the New York Times, neither that paper nor the rest of the liberal mainstream media would pursue the matter further as they almost certainly would (and should have) had his Republican predecessor been found out in a similar matter. Thus encouraged, he has now repeated the falsehood, albeit artfully recast in an attempt to avoid blame.

Having won election and then rammed his ObamaCare bill through Congress in part on the strength of this false argument, he has doubled down on it with the lie now coming from the lips of American?s favorite everyman, actor Tom Hanks as well as in edited clips of interviews with the president and his wife. Kessler gives the performance three out of a possible four Pinocchios on his scale of accuracy. This seems a bit generous but the point is that the story proves that Obama is willing to do and/or say anything, even lying about the death of his mother, in order to gain an advantage. That he thinks repeating the lie will help him get re-elected says a lot about what he thinks of the intelligence of the American people and the integrity of the press that failed to vet him the first time around.

Virtual Intelligence Briefing ? A guide to business continuity planning

Home ? Blogs

This publication provides a summary and general guidelines for business continuity planning (BCP).

While governments, not-for-profit institutions, and non-governmental organizations also deliver critical services, private organizations must continuously deliver products and services to satisfy shareholders and to survive. Although they differ in goals and functions, BCP can be applied by all organizations.

Business-continuity-planningA Business Resumption Plan describes how to resume business after a disruption. A Disaster Recovery Plan deals with recovering Information Technology (IT) assets after a disastrous interruption. Both imply a stoppage in critical operations and are reactive.

Recognizing that some services or products must be continuously delivered without interruption, there has been a shift from Business Resumption Planning to Business Continuity Planning.

A business continuity plan enables critical services or products to be continually delivered to clients. Instead of focusing on resuming a business after critical operations have ceased, or recovering after a disaster, a business continuity plan endeavors to ensure that critical operations continue to be available.

The effects of September 11, 2001

September 11, 2001 demonstrated that although high impact, low probability events could occur, recovery is possible. Even though buildings were destroyed and blocks of Manhattan were affected, businesses and institutions with good continuity plans survived.

The lessons learned include:

  • plans must be updated and tested frequently;
  • all types of threats must be considered;
  • dependencies and interdependencies should be carefully analyzed;
  • key personnel may be unavailable;
  • telecommunications are essential;

What is business continuity planning?

Critical services or products are those that must be delivered to ensure survival, avoid causing injury, and meet legal or other obligations of an organization. Business Continuity Planning is a proactive planning process that ensures critical services or products are delivered during a disruption.

A Business Continuity Plan includes:

  • Plans, measures and arrangements to ensure the continuous delivery of critical services and products, which permits the organization to recover its facility, data and assets.
  • Identification of necessary resources to support business continuity, including personnel, information, equipment, financial allocations, legal counsel, infrastructure protection and accommodations.

Explosion near Syrian security building in Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? An explosion struck near a Syrian government security building in the northern city of Aleppo Sunday, while a harsh security crackdown prevented opposition rallies marking one year since the first nationwide protests of the uprising against President Bashar Assad.

The Syrian state news agency called the Aleppo explosion a "terrorist bombing" and said one policeman and one female civilian were killed, while 30 were injured. It was the second attack in two days on regime strongholds.

Three suicide bombings in the capital Damascus on Saturday killed 27 people. Two of them also targeted government security buildings and the regime the opposition, which it claims is made up of "terrorist" groups carrying out a foreign conspiracy.

Aleppo and Damascus, Syria's two largest cities, have been struck by a number of suicide bombings since December. Both are critical centers of support for Assad and have remained relatively insulated from the unrest shaking much of the country for the past year.

No one has claimed responsibility for any of the weekend attacks.

Mohammed Saeed, an Aleppo resident, said a car bomb exploded early afternoon about 200 yards (meters) from the Political Security Directorate. Security forces started shooting in the air and cordoned off the area to prevent people from approaching.

"It was a strong explosion. It shook parts of the city," Saeed said, citing nearby residents. "White smoke was billowing from the area."

The explosion did not seriously damage the security building, he said. At that time of day the city's central Suleimaniyeh neighborhood is usually crowded with people, especially on Sunday, the first day of Syria's workweek.

The neighborhood has a large Christian population, Saeed said.

The string of large-scale bombings near government security buildings in Damascus and Aleppo that have added a mysterious element to the anti-government revolt. After other similar attacks, U.S. officials suggested al-Qaida militants may be joining the fray.

A previously unknown Islamist group calling itself Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant claimed responsibility for previous attacks in a video posted online, saying it carried them out "to avenge the people of Homs." Homs is an opposition stronghold in central Syria that has been hard hit in the government crackdown.

Al-Qaida's involvement could further fuel the sectarian tensions that the uprising has already stoked. Al-Qaida's supporters are largely Sunni Muslim extremists. Syria's military and political leadership is stacked heavily with members of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad and the ruling elite belong. The Alawite leaders of Syria are closely allied with Shiite Iran.

Sunnis are the majority in the country of 22 million and make up the backbone of the opposition.

The last major suicide bombing in Aleppo was on Feb. 10, when twin blasts struck security compounds, killing 28 people. Damascus has seen a half dozen suicide bombings since December, most hitting intelligence and security buildings.

Many activists consider March 18, 2011, the start of the anti-Assad uprising. Thousands took to the streets in cities across Syria on that day, and security forces killed marchers in the southern city of Daraa.

Since then, Assad's security forces have sought to crush all signs of dissent, and protest and international condemnation have spread. Many in the opposition have taken up arms to defend themselves and attack government forces as the increasingly militarized conflict has become one of the bloodiest of the Arab Spring.

The U.N. says more than 8,000 people have been killed.

Jordanian Information Minister Rakan Majali said Sunday that attempts by arms dealers to smuggle weapons into Syria have gone up since the start of the year, but that Jordanian authorities foil them. He said Jordan's northern border with Syria is being "carefully watched" by Jordanian security.

Also Sunday, activists posted videos online of an overpass on a main north-south highway they said was destroyed by opposition fighters near the village of Khirbet Ghazaleh. The videos said the attack sought to block the army from bringing more tanks and military reinforcements into the area.

The Syrian state news agency said an "armed terrorist group" blew up the bridge and estimated the damage at more than $5 million.

Activists also reported clashes between Syrian troops and army defectors in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, where at least three people were killed. The area is close to the border with Iraq and witnessed clashes in the past.

SANA reported later in the day that "armed terrorists" shot dead 13 people, including women and children, in the village of Hassiba in the central province of Homs.

A Syrian opposition figure told The Associated Press that the people killed in Hassiba were 14 Shiites shot dead for sectarian reasons. The opposition member spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said pro-government thugs known as "shabiha" quickly broke up a protest in Damascus by hundreds of people.

"They had just started protesting, but then some started chanting 'The people want to topple the regime' and the shabiha started beating them," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's head.

Prominent opposition writer Mohammed Sayid Rasas was arrested, as were other protest leaders, he said.

The Observatory said at least 16 people were killed throughout Syria Sunday, while the Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said 29 were killed. The count did not include those killed in Hassiba.

The Syrian government has barred most media from operating in the country, and activist claims could not be independently verified.

Porn industry to Rick Santorum: Butt out

Nick Ut / AP file

Hustler magazine magnate Larry Flynt says there's no evidence porn is harmful.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

The porn industry has an X-rated reaction to Rick Santorum?s vow to crack down on pornography if he?s elected president: Butt out.

Two giants in the industry contacted by msnbc.com scoff at the Republican presidential candidate's?claims that porn is causing ?a pandemic of harm? in America and contributing to violence against women.

Nonsense, says Hustler publisher Larry Flynt.? Absolutely no proof, says Steven Hirsch, founder and co-chairman of Los Angeles-based Vivid Entertainment, one of the largest makers of erotic movies.

Flynt notes that a 1969 commission set up by President Lyndon Johnson spent millions of dollars studying the impact of porn and concluded there was no evidence such materials were harmful.

?You have guys like Santorum come along and they bring out the bogeyman every chance they get,? Flynt said. "You will be hard-pressed to find anyone that can point out to you a study that shows harm is caused to anyone exposed to porn materials."

?I find it ironic that Republicans (like Santorum) are out there wanting less government and government intruding into our lives, but when it comes to moral issues they want government to legislate morality," says Hirsch. "It doesn?t work. It will never work.?

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator who is trying to woo social conservatives, says on his presidential campaign website that if elected he will hire an attorney general who will ?vigorously? enforce federal obscenity laws curtailing distribution of hardcore porn.

He also says that studies have shown porn causes brain changes in adults and children, and that every family should be concerned about its harmful effects.

Santorum says he would enforce US obscenity laws that Obama ignores

The little-discussed position paper made the Internet rounds after The Daily Caller published a column this week calling attention to it.

Though Santorum rattles off a list of social harms that he says is caused by porn, he doesn?t specifically call for a ban on all porn in his website statement. Instead, he says, he?s most concerned about exposure to ?hardcore? porn.

?While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration,? he writes.

Hirsch says a crackdown by the attorney general won?t work.

?We?ve seen that before. John Ashcroft was that guy. Edwin Meese was that guy. They can prosecute but ultimately it?s juries that decide what is and isn?t obscene,? Hirsch says. ?Over last 20 years there have been very, very few obscenity convictions.?

Hirsch suggests making a deal with Santorum: ?We will stay out of his church, and he will stay out of our bedrooms."

Santorum says he backs the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography coalition, which is lobbying?Congress, 2012 political candidates and the government?to crack down on what it describes as "the growing amount of hardcore pornography available in America."

Santorum isn?t the first presidential candidate to vow to target porn.

Former GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann went further than Santorum. She signed a pledge vowing to support a constitutional amendment to ban all pornography and same-sex marriage.?

Do we need tougher enforcement of laws regulating hardcore porn?

Hit the Open Road with Triumph Motorcycles) - Pop`s Automotive Blog

One of the main reasons people buy motorcycles is to experience the feeling of driving down the open road on a powerful machine. There are many choices when looking for a motorcycle. The first thing that a potential buyer needs to decide is the style they are looking for. There are classics, roadsters, cruisers, super sports and touring models. Each type of motorcycle offers the driver something unique. Some aim for a comfortable ride, and the goal of others is to go as fast as possible. One of the leading types is triumph motorcycles. They offer a model in each of the different styles, and they are all crafted to meet the highest of standards.

The cruiser is one of the most popular types of motorcycles on the road. This type of bike offers a very strong look, and excellent handling. The offerings in this type of bike that come from triumph motorcycles are among the best in the world. The engine on any motorcycle is the most important element, and many in this class have a 1,600 cc engine that will deliver on power and sound. Handling and comfort should also be considered. These are often determined by the seat height, and the quality of the bike build.

Another class of motorcycle is the classic. When most people picture a motorcycle, this is the type that comes to mind. One of the best classic bikes is built by triumph motorcycles. The classic is going to have a smaller engine when compared to the cruiser, and it is also going to have a different look. One main advantage to this style of bike is the fuel economy. The cruiser will get some of the best gas mileage of any motorcycle on the road.

For drivers that are looking for a bit more adventure and excitement, the super sports motorcycle is the best fit. These bikes are inspired by the fastest racing machines on the planet. The bike in this class from triumph motorcycles has sleek lines, a powerful engine, and some of the best handling around. Finding the right motorcycle is a matter of preference, and the ultimate decision comes down to the type of driving that is going to be done.

Recent Eats and Happenings | TahiniToo

Time keeps prancing along ahead of me, and I simply cannot keep up. These last few weeks have been busy, adventurous, and challenging. Most recently, I finished my first freelance photography project with a series of wedding/celebration cakes. It is so much fun to photograph pretty things that I didn?t have to create myself!! Here is one example:

Isn?t that a beautiful cake?

Tim and I also went on a day hike last week and spotted this waterfall hidden in the trees:

We had to step over a lot of fallen trees and slippery rocks?(click the link, that?s where I went to university!!!)?in order to get close, but it was worth it. We hiked a mile further down the trail and had lunch in a dwindling patch of sunshine that eventually disappeared.

I also photographed some recipes for the Food Empowerment Project website. This is an absolutely wonderful organization that ?seeks to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one?s food choices.?They encourage healthy food choices that reflect a more compassionate society by spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working conditions for produce workers, and the unavailability of healthy foods in low-income areas.?

The Food Empowerment Project website has a small, but growing recipe database. If you have vegan recipes (preferably with an accompanying photograph) you would like to share, definitely contact them. They would appreciate it so much!

Hazelnut Pesto (one of my recipe submissions!)

Champagne Risotto with Tofu & Portobello?(I actually made this recipe without the alcohol since I don?t drink, and was still delicious!)

Next week I will have a new vegan product review, and quite possibly, a new vegan cookbook review too!!! Happy Spring (almost!)!!

Attorney asks for dismissal in WikiLeaks case

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? An attorney for an Army private accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of pages of classified information asked a military judge Thursday to dismiss the charges, arguing the government bungled the handover of documents to the defense.

The request came during a hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning at a military courtroom at Fort Meade, Md., near Baltimore. Military prosecutors say Manning, a 24-year-old Oklahoma native, downloaded and sent to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks a vast store of sensitive documents and diplomatic cables. The military says Manning indirectly aided al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula by giving information to the WikiLeaks site.

Defense lawyers say Manning was clearly a troubled young soldier who never should have been deployed to Iraq or given access to classified material. They say the leaked material did little or no harm to national security.

On Thursday, military prosecutors and Manning's attorney David Coombs disagreed about the extent of the government's obligation to turn over documents in the case before a trial, which has not yet been scheduled. Coombs argued the government must turn over a broad range of documents, including ones that are classified, but he has not received information he requested. He asked that charges against his client be dismissed because the government has "hopelessly" messed up the document turnover in the nearly two years his client has been incarcerated.

Capt. Ashden Fein, a military prosecutor, told the judge presiding over the case that the government had tried to produce "as much as possible" and that it had complied with the rules. In at least one case, he said, the defense was engaging in a "fishing expedition" for information. And he said classified documents needed to be treated differently.

The government will get a chance to respond to Coombs' motion before the judge, Col. Denise Lind, rules on it.

Manning has been charged with 22 counts including aiding the enemy, which could result in life imprisonment.

Military prosecutors say the documents Manning sent to WikiLeaks included nearly half a million sensitive battlefield reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables, and a video of a deadly 2007 Army helicopter attack that WikiLeaks shared with the world and dubbed "Collateral Murder."

Manning could learn during a second hearing scheduled for Friday when his trial will start as well as get answers to other pending motions. He has so far declined to enter a plea to the counts he faces. He also put off choosing whether to be tried by a military jury or judge alone.

Hollie Cavanagh Proves "The Power of Love" on American Idol

Simply put, in the words of Randy Jackson, Hollie Cavanagh "blew it out of da box" on American Idol last night.

The season 11 finalist showed no fear in covering "The Power of Love," a ballad made famous by one of the best voices in the history of music, Celione Dion.

But Cavanagh made that superstar proud during her performance, belting out strong note after strong note and likely taking the title of Female Favorite away from Jessica Sanchez.

Can Hollie speed it up? Can she ace anything but slow tempo love songs? Does it matter? Those are questions for next week. For now, just sit back and enjoy one of the best auditions of the year:

British doctors urge against metal hip joints

LONDON (AP) ? British experts at the world's biggest artificial joint registry said doctors should stop using metal-on-metal hip replacements, citing an analysis showing they have to be fixed or replaced more often than other implants.

All metal hip joints were already under scrutiny over questions about how long they last, and one major manufacturer recalled its product over a year ago. Last year, regulators in the U.S. asked makers to conduct safety studies on them. Most artificial hip joints are plastic or ceramic.

Earlier this month, the British agency that regulates medical devices warned that patients with these joints should have yearly blood tests to make sure no dangerous metals are seeping into their bodies. It also advised patients with symptoms such as pain, swelling or reduced movement to get MRI scans to check for muscle damage in case the joints need to be removed.

In the new study, experts analyzed data for more than 400,000 hip replacements from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales between 2003 and 2011. More than 31,000 of those were metal-on-metal devices.

After five years, about 6 percent of people with the metal-on-metal variety needed surgery to fix or replace them. That compares with just 1.7 to 2.3 percent of people who had ceramic or plastic joints.

Doctors usually expect hip joints to last at least a decade. The study was published online Tuesday in the journal, Lancet. It was paid for by the National Joint Registry.

Ashley Blom, head of orthopedic research at the University of Bristol and one of the study authors, emphasized most people with a metal hip haven't needed a replacement. But with so many alternatives, he said there was no reason to take that risk.

"If I were a patient, I would not choose a metal-on-metal hip," he said.

He said the rates of failing metal hips were likely an underestimate since not all patients report their symptoms or have surgery to fix the problem.

In 2010, DePuy, part of Johnson & Johnson, recalled a metal hip implant after it was linked to high failure rates. Blom said the new analysis suggests the problem applies to all metal-on-metal hips, not just one brand. Doctors began using metal-on-metal implants after laboratory tests suggested the devices would be more resistant to wear and reduced the chances of dislocation. They aren't sure why that isn't the case once they are used in patients.

Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked all manufacturers of metal-on-metal hips to conduct safety studies. Use of the devices has dropped dramatically in recent years worldwide. In the U.K., only about 5 percent of patients are believed to be getting the metal hips.

In the U.S., estimates are about 500,000 people have them.

Some experts called for tighter regulation, warning there might be similar problems with other joint replacements, such as those for knees and shoulders.

"I wouldn't be surprised if this was just the beginning of the storm," said Art Sedrakyan, an associate professor of public health at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, who authored an accompanying commentary in Lancet. "A lot of products have been allowed onto the market without clinical evidence they work."

2013 Ford Fiesta Facelift prototype spy photo

The new generation Ford Fiesta is entering its fourth year of sales following its showroom introduction in the middle of 2008. Now, would be an ideal time to give it a mid-cycle refresh and our spies have caught a prototype while it was out testing in cold weather conditions.

The test driver on this occasion appears to have taken the Fiesta facelift past its limits and crashed it into deeper snow. It meant a bit of assistance was required by a rescue vehicle to get the prototype back on the road.

The new prototype looks almost identical to a previous version that was caught earlier this year. It wears a bit of camouflage over the front end that attempts to hide the restyled front fascia which features a set of LED headlights.

Engine options will definitely include a 1.0 liter Ecoboost unit that generates 80hp ( 59 kW / 81 PS ) and it is likely to be complimented by tuned configurations that generate 99hp (74 kW / 100 PS) and 123hp (92 kW / 125 PS).

Alcohol and Drug Use in Different Industries | Health Testing & Drug ...

Alcohol and drug use can do harm to our health, as well as to those in our surroundings. Even with continuous effort to warn of its health effects, there are still millions of people who use prohibited substances. Some of them are employed in different industries across the country. Research found that there are industries that have higher cases of workers with alcohol and drug use. It is found that industries that were traditionally dominated by males and those employed with more young workers have higher rates of alcohol and drug use.

The following industries are listed by the Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA) to have higher risks of substance use and abuse in the workplace.

Construction Industry

The construction industry requires safety at all times. Handling machines, other equipments and tools are dangerous when used without caution. But according to a Federal government survey, the construction industry has the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse.

Among full-time workers aged 18 to 49:

  • 12% reported illicit drug use in the past 30 days.
  • About 21% reported illicit drug use during the past year.
  • About 13% admitted to heavy alcohol consumption.

With this number, safety is a paramount concern. That is why a lot of businesses in the construction industry are adopting programs to lower the risk of drug and alcohol use in the workplace.

General Services Industry

Most drug and alcohol testing programs are implemented in industries with ?safety-sensitive? duties. Often times, organizations under general services are overlooked. Substance abuse in this industry also post a high risk as workers in this industry have access to important documents like financial statements, confidential information, and hold company ideas and plans. Workers handle ?security-sensitive? duties in this industry. A Federal survey shows the rate of workers who abuse drugs and alcohol in different fields in this industry.

  • Business & Repair ? current illicit drug use was found at 11.1%, while current heavy alcohol use was at 9.7% of workers.
  • Finance, Real Estate, Insurance ? 5.4% are current illicit drug users, while 4.5% are heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Personal Services ? 10.3% are illicit drug users, while 5.8% are heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Professional and Related Services ? 4.2% are illicit drug users, while 3.1% are heavy alcohol users.
  • Public Administration ? 3.7% are current illicit drug users, while 7.2% are heavy alcohol drinkers.

It is important to employ workers who are healthy, to ensure that all information in the workplace is safe, especially when it involves handling other people?s personal information.

Health Care Industry

Health care workers are also found to be at risk of workplace substance abuse. Workers in this industry who use and abuse prohibited substances post a threat to themselves, their co-workers, and patients. Among the different professions in this industry, nurses and nursing aides have the highest rate of current drug use, at 5.5%. Therapists have the highest rate of current heavy alcohol drinkers, at 3.5%. Physicians, Dentists, and Optometrists have the highest reported rate of illicit drug use in the past year with 19.8%.

Hospitality

In this industry, customer service is the key to success. It is a threat to the business when workers start doing things out of character because they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Workers who abuse drugs and alcohol can give a bad reputation to any kind of business. According to a Federal survey:

  • Food preparers reported the highest rate of current illicit drug use and current heavy alcohol use at 16.3%.
  • Waiters and waitresses reported the second highest in the hospitality industry with 15.4% admitted to current illicit drug use and 12.1% current heavy alcohol use.
  • Among maids, 7.9% are current illicit drug users while 3.6% are current heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Among ground keepers, 11.4% admit to current illicit drug use and 9.8% heavy alcohol consumption.
  • Janitors also have high rates with 13% admitting to illicit drug use and 10.3% with heavy alcohol use.

High-Tech Industry

This industry is responsible with technology and 100% focus is needed when performing duties. Alcohol and drug use can impair workers in this industry, which can post a threat to a company?s success. Research found that 6.1% of employees who handle computer and data processors admit to current illicit drug use, and 16.2% are currently heavy alcohol drinkers. 3.6% of computer programmers and operators are current illicit drug users while 2.7% are heavy alcohol drinkers.

Manufacturing Industry

Part of establishing business success is providing quality products. In the manufacturing industry, workers who use and abuse alcohol can cause damage to goods, increase risk of accident in the workplace, and harm to oneself. Substance abuse is a problem in this industry and the following fields are mostly affected:

Durable goods sector

  • Lumber and wood product workers reported the highest rate of current illicit drug use and current heavy alcohol use at 8.9% and 12%.
  • Professional equipment workers reported that 7.7% of them are current illicit drug users while 7.3% are heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Other categories include workers who handle electrical machinery, machinery, metal industries, and transportation equipment.

Non-durable goods sector

  • Printing and publishing workers have the highest rate of current illicit drug use at 11.7%.
  • Chemical product workers have the highest rate of current heavy alcohol use at 9.5%.
  • Other categories include workers who handle apparel, food, paper, rubber & plastic, and textile.

Retail Industry

Drug abuse is a problem in the retail industry. When workers are impaired by prohibited substances they are putting themselves in danger, at the same time become a threat to customers and co-workers. Prevention is necessary especially because workers deal with customers face-to-face. According to a Federal government survey, the following rates show drug and alcohol abuse among workers in the retail industry, aged 18 to 49:

  • Food and drink workers have the highest rates in this industry. 16.3% admitted that they are currently using illicit drugs, while 15.4% admitted they are currently heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Furniture and appliance store workers admitted that 14.4% of them are current illicit drug users and 6.2% are heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Auto supply and gas station workers reported that there are 11.2% current illicit drug users and 13.2% heavy alcohol drinkers.
  • Other areas that have a drug and alcohol abuse problem include workers from shoe and apparel stores, department stores, grocery stores, and other retail stores.

Transportation Industry

We are always on the road. Whether we are going to work or just on our way to our local grocery store, we encounter buses and trucks on the road. The transportation industry is one of the industries that have high rates of alcohol and drug abuse. This poses a threat to road safety and increases risk of accident. The Federal government shows the following rates of alcohol and drug abuse in this industry.

  • Truck drivers (light) have the highest use of illicit drugs in the past year, at 18.9%. They also have the highest rate of heavy alcohol use, at 15.1%.
  • Vehicle repairers reported a 17% illicit drug use in the past year. 14.9% admitted to heavy alcohol drinking.
  • Among truck drivers (heavy), 16.4% admitted to illicit drug use in the past year while 13.3% admitted to heavy alcohol drinking.
  • Bus drivers reported a 13.6% illicit drug use in the past year and 6.7% admitted to heavy alcohol use.

Wholesale Industry

The wholesale industry is responsible for delivering products to businesses. Drug and alcohol use can impair workers that can possibly lead to errors with consequences. A Federal government survey found that drug and alcohol abuse in this industry is a significant problem. They found that among full-time wholesale workers, aged 18 to 49:

  • 8% admitted to drug use in the past 30 days.
  • 15.5% showed that they used illicit drugs in the past year.
  • 10.3% admitted to heavy alcohol consumption.

The rates show how drug and alcohol abuse can post a threat to different industries. Some industries and organizations are already following a drug and alcohol testing program to decrease the rates and provide a safer working environment. For organizations or businesses who want to start their own drug and alcohol program, there are agencies and organizations that provide materials and assistance in developing a program that meets your needs. You can visit the DATIA website or The U.S. Department of Labor for information.

PI Newswire :: Private security business

Posted on March 9, 2012 by admin

Good governance in any society requires the safety and well-being of its citizens. Peace and harmony cannot be maintained by law-enforcement agencies alone. In any country of the world the many elements responsible for personal security include the individual, corporate bodies and the establishment. While private security has given significant support to law-enforcement agencies in reducing their workload the maintenance of law and order, governments all over the world are increasingly turning to it as a cost-effective means. In the US and many other developed countries governments are increasingly giving policing functions to the private sector, handing over management of jails, investigation of crimes and patrolling of select places.

To its credit, the federal ministry of interior, assisted by the intelligence agencies, has prevented private security companies from becoming ?private military companies.? Many such entities have become that in the US, the UK and Europe because of the business of ?outsourcing? military tasks in war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. ?Convoy protection? morphed into other areas with companies like Blackwater (now known as ?Xe Services?), even having their own aircraft and helicopter fleets. Mercenaries in all but name.

Private security is the driving force creating more jobs in the services sector at very small cost, a very potent economic force-multiplier. $50,000 in foreign exchange is required to create one job in the manufacturing sector. Contrast that with the less than $300 in rupee terms required, in training and verification, for an employment slot in private security.

In my article titled ?Private security? (August 2002), I wrote: ?For many years, successive governments have been trying to regulate private security companies which first came into operation in Pakistan in 1984 but really started proliferating since 1986. Special credit must go to Mr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, the Sindh finance minister. In one short meeting he erased most of the difficulties the draft ordinance had posed for years.? Subsequently, the draft of an ordinance crafted by the Sindh government was emulated by the ministry of interior to regulate private security companies, ultimately being approved by the federal cabinet for the Islamabad Capital Territory in the early 2000s.
