Going Green for Your Garden: Not Your Traditional Tips | Home ...

The ?green? movement has meant revolutionary changes in how people do things in their everyday lives. This method of conserving resources can also be extended to gardening activities, to use less water, better soils and less toxic pesticides and fertilizers to prevent damage to the environment. Going green in your garden is easy once you understand the basic principles.

Water Conservation

Using water wisely is the first step in making your garden greener. Some plants are not native to the area in which you live and may require much more water than normally falls there. Choose plants that are native to your area of the country that have adapted to the climate and water conditions in your area. Moisture retaining soil conditioners, such as compost, vermiculite and sphagnum moss, can help to prevent evaporation that loses water from the soil. Set up a rain barrel on your property to collect rainwater to use for watering plants. Use mulch around plants to prevent the sun?s heat from evaporating moisture from the soil.

Solar Power

Use solar cells available at garden stores to light your garden paths and shed instead of electric power. You will save money and help to preserve the environment. There are also solar power rebates that anyone can take advantage of when investing in Infinite Energy Solar Power.

Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation is a method of conserving water that gives plants a continuous supply of small amounts of water. Many garden centers offer drip irrigation equipment or you can put together a system of your own design with plastic tubing or PVC pipe.

Organic Fertilizers

Instead of synthetic fertilizers that can upset the balance of the yard and nearby waterways, use organic fertilizers that break down easily and are used more efficiently by the plants. You can recycle yard and kitchen waste in a simple compost bin in your back yard. You don?t need a great deal of equipment. A small spot in the corner of the yard, some chicken wire to make a small, enclosed area, and a pitchfork is all you need to get started. The compost is made from ?brown? components, such as dried leaves and other yard waste, and ?green? components, such as grass clippings and food peelings. A bit of water and frequent turning will then turn these materials into a rich amendment for your garden.

Natural Pesticides

Instead of the toxic poisons used in many garden pesticides, use organic compounds such as neem oil, garlic spray or sticky tape to remove insects that threaten your plants. Even a strong blast of water from the garden hose can help to dislodge pests without adding chemicals to your soil. Biological controls like introducing ladybugs, lacewings and other beneficial species can keep your garden free of damaging insects.

US-Afghan base attacked in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban suicide bombers attacked a joint U.S.-Afghan air base in eastern Afghanistan early Sunday, detonating explosives at the gate and sparking a gunbattle that lasted at least two hours with American helicopters firing down on the militants.

The attackers and at least five Afghans were killed, officials said. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the assault.

It was the largest attack on the Jalalabad air base since February, when a suicide car bombing at the gate triggered an explosion that killed nine Afghans, six of them civilians.

In Sunday's attack, two vehicles packed with explosives barreled toward the main gate of the base around 6 a.m. local time. The first vehicle, a four-wheel-drive car, blew up at the gate, said Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal, a spokesman for the provincial police chief. Guards started shooting at the second vehicle before it too exploded, he added. It was unclear whether the explosives were detonated by the attackers themselves or by shooting from the guards.

Two Afghan students from a private medical school were caught up in the attack and killed, as were three other Afghans working at the base, Mashreqiwal said. He did not know whether the base workers were private guards, members of the security forces or civilian employees.

Nine attackers took part in the assault in total, he said, three of whom were killed in the suicide blasts and another six gunmen who died in the ensuing fighting that lasted a few hours.

Maj. Martyn Crighton, a spokesman for the international military force in Afghanistan, said that helicopters "were deployed and used."

The NATO military coalition described the attack as a failure.

"We can confirm insurgents, including multiple suicide bombers, attacked Jalalabad Airfield this morning. None of the attackers succeeded in breaching the perimeter," Lt. Col. Hagen Messer, a spokesman for the international military coalition, said in an email.

He said that the fighting had ended by midmorning and that reports showed one member of the Afghan security forces was killed. Several foreign troops were wounded, but Messer did not give any numbers or details.

"The final assessment of what happened this morning is not yet complete, but initial reports indicate there were three suicide bombers," Messer said.

In the south, meanwhile, a NATO service member was killed in an insurgent attack, the international coalition said in a statement. It did not provide further details.

The play was called back on a holding call. (AP Photo/Mike Roemer)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? Morgan Burnett's two big plays overcame a whole bunch of them by Adrian Peterson.

Burnett picked off Christian Ponder twice, James Starks had Green Bay's first rushing touchdown in almost two months and the Packers overcame a monster day by Peterson for a 23-14 victory Sunday over the Minnesota Vikings.

Peterson finished with 210 yards, the most he's had since blowing out his ACL and MCL last December. But the Vikings (6-6) clearly felt the absence of Percy Harvin, who missed his third straight game with a sprained ankle, and Ponder didn't help matters with his interceptions, one in the end zone and the other around the Green Bay 10. .

The Packers turned both miscues into field goals and Starks' 22-yard score gave Green Bay its 10th straight victory against an NFC North opponent. The win keeps the Packers in contention for the division title, with three of their last four games against NFC North foes, including a Dec. 16 game against Chicago and the Dec. 30 season finale in Minnesota.

Starks finished with 66 yards rushing and James Jones had Green Bay's other touchdown, a 32-yard score on the very first drive. Aaron Rodgers was 27 of 35 for 286 yards. No. 1 receiver Greg Jennings, back in the lineup for the first time since Sept. 30 after tearing an abdominal muscle, had four catches for 46 yards.

Mason Crosby kicked field goals of 30, 47 and 31 yards, a sign he may finally be coming out of his slump.

Ponder was 12 of 25 for 119 yards. He had only two completions to a wide receiver, both coming late in the fourth quarter.

With Jennings back in the lineup, the Packers were almost back to full strength on offense and they showed just how dangerous they can be. Spreading around the ball to more teammates on the first two drives than some offenses manage in an entire season ? eight, with a pass also thrown Jennings' way ? Rodgers and the Packers had a 10-0 lead after two drives.

But after Jordy Nelson, Rodgers' second-favorite target, was hurt during the second drive and right tackle T.J. Lang injured his ankle in the second quarter, the Packers lost their rhythm.

Peterson, meanwhile, was keeping the Vikings going. His 82-yard scoring run in the second quarter, his longest of the year, gave the Vikings a 14-10 lead. He put the Vikings in great position to pad that lead, ripping off a 48-yarder on the first play of the second half to put Minnesota at the Green Bay 12.

But Ponder got flushed out of the pocket and his heave into the end zone went right to Burnett. The Packers couldn't get a touchdown, with Rodgers overthrowing in the end zone on third-and-7. But after looking as if they were going for it on fourth-and-7 from the 29, drawing a timeout from the Vikings, the Packers took a chance with Crosby again.

This time, it paid off as his kick wobbled through the uprights for a 47-yard field goal.

Rodgers was picked off on a trick play, but the Packers defense bailed him out, stuffing Peterson for no gain on third-and-1. A bad Kluwe punt gave the Packers the ball at their own 49, and Starks bolted 22 yards for the score four plays later to give Green Bay a 20-14 lead. It was Green Bay's first rushing touchdown since Oct. 7, a span of seven games and 22 touchdowns.

Burnett picked Ponder off again on the next drive, and Crosby kicked his third field goal of the day to seal the win.

Crock Pot Recipe Exchange: Crock Pot Friendship Tea Mix (Gift In A ...

Photobucket
?
This year I'm going to be doing lots of home made gifts to be giving to friends, neighbors and family.?Last year the crock pot gifts that I introduced to y'all were a big hit. Let's keep that going this year!

?

The first crock pot gift I'm going to share with you is friendship tea. You may also have heard it called Russian tea or spiced tea. This tea always tastes and smells like the holidays to me. ?

?

Here is how I do it (and this makes two gifts):

?

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Tang instant orange breakfast drink
  • 1 cup of CountryTime instant lemonade
  • 1 cup of unsweetened instant tea
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves

Directions:
  1. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. I use a whisk to evenly incorporate.
  2. Divide mix equally into (2) pint sized jars. Since this makes 4 cups it should fill the jars completely.
  3. Place lid on jars and adorn with ribbon and cinnamon sticks.

Include these instructions on each jar:

?

FRIENDSHIP TEA

?

Pour 16 cups of water into a large crock pot and turn to high for 1 - 2 hours. Now pour entire contents of jar into warmed water and stir or whisk to dissolve completely. Turn to warms setting. Serve in heatproof mugs and have orange slices and cinnamon sticks for garnishing. Enjoy!

?

This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled to get multiple gifts out of it.

NOTE: I have tried using a lemon instant tea mix and doing away with the CountryTime lemonade and it did NOT taste the same. I wouldn't suggest it at all.

(AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner says he was "flabbergasted" when Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner (GYT'-nur) pitched the White House plan to save the nation from the "fiscal cliff."

Boehner tells "Fox News Sunday" that after Geithner briefed him privately on Thursday, he looked at Geithner and said, "You can't be serious." Boehner called it "silliness" that the White House was, among other things, asking Congress to give up its power to set the nation's debt limit.

President Barack Obama's plan calls for $1.6 trillion in higher taxes over the next decade. Boehner, R-Ohio, says he's willing to rethink tax deductions for the wealthiest Americans, but declined to provide further specifics. The White House says the GOP tax proposals so far wouldn't pull in as much revenue as they claim.
