Miguel Maysonet runs for 220, two TDs as Stony Brook controls Army

By Greg Logan, Newsday

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- It was halftime Saturday afternoon?at Michie Stadium, and Stony Brook had quieted an Army crowd of 31,006 by taking a 13-point lead. The?Seawolves' first-ever win over an FBS school in five tries was so close they could taste it, but they were mindful of what happened two weeks earlier at Syracuse, when a three-point halftime lead dissolved into an 11-point loss.

This time the Seawolves (4-1) left no doubt. They took the second-half kickoff and held the ball for 16 plays and a season-high 8:23, driving 75 yards for Miguel Maysonet's second touchdown to send them on their way to a dominant 23-3 victory over the Black Knights (0-4).

Describing the mood in the halftime locker room, Stony Brook left tackle Scott Hernandez said: "It goes back to Week 3 against Syracuse. We came out as an offense and did not finish that game, and that left a bitter taste in our mouths. We told ourselves, 'We're not going to let that happen again. We're going to finish this game and play harder than we've ever played before.' And that's exactly what we did."

Maysonet capped that epic drive with a 1-yard scoring run to go with the 49-yard TD he scored on the Seawolves' fourth play of the game. For the second straight week, the senior rushed for a career high, carrying 32 times for 220 yards as SBU controlled the ball for 38:06.

"I'm excited for us to be able to say that we were the first team to in Stony Brook history," an exultant Maysonet said. "I love those 'firsts.' "

SBU's offense played defense by controlling the ball to keep an Army running attack that led the nation in rushing with 399.0 yards per game off the field. The Seawolves' opening 74-yard drive lasted only four plays as Maysonet broke over the left side to score from 49 yards for a 7-0 lead, but the drives that resulted in three Wes Skiffington field goals of 27, 44 and 25 yards took 11 plays, 12 plays and 10 plays.

Coach Chuck Priore made a?subtle?halftime adjustment, adding two running plays involving tight end Chris Fenellon in the blocking scheme, and they fueled the opening drive of the second half.

"That drive reflected those adjustments," Priore said. "It was two things we didn't work on all week . . . We put a drive together that showed we had arrived."

Army's triple-option running game was deceptive, but Stony Brook held the Knights to 273 yards, 126 below their average, forcing and recovering four fumbles and producing a goal-line stand. Army had a pair of 100-yard rushers in each of its first three games but was topped by 89 yards from quarterback Trent Steelman and 81 from Raymond Maples.

Rover back Dan Mulrooney recovered one fumble and stopped Steelman for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Stony Brook 4-yard line in the first quarter to protect the 7-0 lead.

"Playing an option team, you know the ball is going to be on the ground," Mulrooney said. "We were 4-for-4 on fumble recoveries. When you have that stat, it's hard to lose."

Indeed, this was the complete game the Seawolves and Priore believed they could play, especially after the way they came back to win the previous week against Colgate.

"I told them before the game, I think this team rode last year's team up until the second half of last week," Priore said. "I told them, 'If you really want it to be your team, you have to do something today.' "

The message came through loud and clear

(AP) ? With Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore around, Lindsay Whalen's focus generally isn't on scoring. That doesn't mean she can't.

Whalen scored 20 points to lead the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 78-70 victory over the Seattle Storm in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals Friday night.

"Of course we know they're going to pay a lot of attention to Seimone and Maya, they're great shooters and great players," Whalen said. "We all know we have to step it up and make plays as well."

Augustus scored 19 points, Moore added 16 and Rebekkah Brunson had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota. Whalen also tallied six assists and four rebounds.

The Lynx shot 46 percent against a Storm team that held opponents to a league-low 39 percent this season, and hit 22 of 28 free throws ? including 8 for 10 from Whalen.

"They have multiple weapons out there," Seattle coach Brian Agler said. "If you give too much attention to any one person, someone else will take advantage of it. Tonight, (Whalen) took advantage."

Rookie reserve Shekinna Stricklen scored 13 points to lead the Storm. Katie Smith and Lauren Jackson added 12 points each, with all of but one of Jackson's coming in the first half.

Game 2 is Sunday at Seattle.

Jackson, a three-time WNBA MVP, didn't play in any of the teams' four regular-season games as she was training with the Australian national team for the London Olympics. The Lynx won three of those matchups.

Jackson played a season-high 27 minutes, but it wasn't enough as Seattle shot just 39.7 percent from the floor and never led. Minnesota improved to 18-0 when holding opponents below 40 percent this season.

"I didn't get the looks I was getting in the first half," Jackson said. "They changed their defense up. We definitely have to look at how we're going to combat that next game."

The Lynx, who went 16-1 at home in the regular season, turned the ball over nine times in the first 20 minutes and led just 33-27 despite Seattle's 29-percent shooting from the floor in the first half.

But Augustus and Whalen scored six points each and Brunson added three more as Minnesota opened the third quarter on a 15-8 run, and extended the lead to a game-high 17 on Candice Wiggins' 3-pointer with 2:38 left in period.

Seattle then answered with an 11-3 run to close the quarter, and responded again with a 9-2 run over a nearly 5-minute stretch when the Lynx jumped back ahead by 13 on Moore's runner with 6:38 to play. But six points was as close as the Storm would get, as Moore and Augustus hit clutch shots in the final two minutes and Minnesota made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the victory.

"I thought we got decent shots, we were playing well, just all of a sudden we're not scoring and not getting back on defense," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We have to have that focus when we don't score, they don't score. That's what let them back in it, a string of missed shots and then they made the barrage of 3s."

The Lynx and Storm face off in the postseason for the first time since the 2004 Western Conference semifinals, which Seattle swept en route to the first of its two league titles.

Minnesota is trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Los Angeles accomplished the feat in the 2001 and '02 seasons. The Houston Comets won the league's first four titles from 1997-2000.

D-Day for al-Qaida in Somalia? Last bastion attacked

By NBC News wire services

MOGADISHU, Somalia --?Troops launched an amphibious assault before dawn Friday on the al-Qaida militant group al-Shabab's last stronghold in Somalia.

Other African Union forces were traveling overland to link up with the joint Kenyan-Somali force in the port city of Kismayo.

The commander of the U.N-backed African Union troops, Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti, said the aim was to "liberate the people of Kismayo to enable them to lead their lives in peace, stability and security."

Col. Cyrus Oguna, the Kenyan military's top spokesman, said the attack met minimal resistance, but al-Shabab denied that the city had fallen and said fighting was taking place.

Oguna told The Associated Press that al-Shabab, which formally merged with al-Qaida in February, had incurred "heavy losses" but that Kenyan forces have not yet had any injuries or deaths.

"We came from the beach side and we're moving towards the main city. Our surveillance aircraft are monitoring every event taking place on the ground," he told Reuters.

"For now, we're not everywhere. We've taken a large part of it without resistance, I don't see anything major happening," he said.

Born in the USA, but now among Somalia's Islamist terrorists

Residents in Kismayo, a city of about 193,000 people, contacted by The Associated Press said that Kenyan troops had taken control of the port, but not the whole city.

"Al-Shabab fighters are on the streets and heading toward the front line in speeding cars. Their radio is still on the air and reporting the war," resident Mohamed Haji told The Associated Press. Haji said that helicopters were hitting targets in the town in southeastern Somalia.

At an international one-day summit Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron said the world would "pay a price" if it fails to help Somalia overcome terrorism, piracy and starvation. ITV's Lee Comley reports.?

Another resident, Ismail Suglow, told Reuters that he could hear shelling from the ships and that the rebels were responding with anti-aircraft guns.

"We saw seven ships early in the morning and now their firing looks like lightning and thunder. Al-Shabab have gone towards the beach. The ships poured many AU troops on the beach," he added.

Expert: War on terror at 'critical' point as al-Qaida looks to regroup in Africa

On Thursday, residents said planes had dropped leaflets on Kismayo warning civilians to evacuate within 24 hours, Reuters reported.?More than 10,000 residents fled Kismayo in the last several weeks.

Resident Faduma Abdulle said Friday that she is now leaving too.

She said al-Shabab made an announcement on its radio station Friday to trick residents into moving toward the invading troops.

"They told residents through their radio to loot a Kenyan ship that washed up on the coast, but instead the residents who rushed there were attacked by helicopters," she said. "Some of them have died but I don't know how many. The situation is tense and many are fleeing. It's a dangerous situation."

A U.S. military spokesman, Lt. Cdr. Dave Hecht, said the U.S. Africa Command, known as AFRICOM, is closely monitoring the situation but that "we are not participating in Kenya's military activities in the region."

Militants: Taking city not 'a piece of cake'
Al-Shabab said it would not give up Kismayu easily.

"Going into Kismayo is not a piece of cake. We are still fighting them on the beach where they landed," Sheik Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabab's spokesman for military operations, told Reuters on Friday. "For us, this is just the beginning, our troops are spread everywhere."

Oguna said the assault is part of a four-prong attack involving Kenyan forces currently in villages outside Kismayo.

The amphibious assault landed between 10:30 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday local time (3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday ET)?, he said. Some of the troops had night-vision goggles, he said.

Somali Olympic chief killed in Mogadishu suicide blast

African Union troops pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu in August 2011, ending four years of control of the capital by the fighters.

The Ugandan and Burundian troops that make up the bulk of the African Union force in Mogadishu have slowly been taking control of towns outside of Mogadishu.

The expanding control by AU troops sent al-Shabab fighters fleeing south toward Kismayo, north to other regions of Somalia and across the Gulf of Aden to Yemen, according to American and African Union officials.

Kenya police: Imminent attack by suicide bombers thwarted

Al-Shabab still holds sway across many small, poor villages of southern Somalia. The loss of Kismayo would be significant.

The militants taxed goods coming into its port. Al-Shabab lost its major source of financing last year when it was pushed out of Bakara market in Mogadishu, where it also charged taxes.

The march toward Kismayo by the Kenyan forces has been nearly a year in the making.

Masked 'goons' kill at least 17 in attacks on churches in Kenya

Kenyan troops entered Somalia last October after a string of kidnappings inside neighboring Kenya, including of Westerners in and around the beach resort town of Lamu, which is also seeing the construction of a new port and could one day be final point of a new oil pipeline from South Sudan.

Kenyan forces were bogged down by rain and poor roads for months but have making slow and steady progress toward Kismayo in recent weeks.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Venus transit movie shows perspective in viewing our Solar System

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? New movies of the transit of Venus on 6 June 2012, viewed from two different locations on Earth, clearly show the parallax effects that have made Venus transits so important historically. The results were presented at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid, Spain.

The movies compress 6 hours of observations and 5000 individual images taken by optical and solar telescopes into a 40 second video. Data gaps due to cloudy conditions produce jumps in the otherwise smooth Venus motion across the Sun disk. The observations were taken from Svalbard in Norway and Canberra in Australia, which are separated by 11600km.

When the images from the two locations are superimposed, the parallax effect (which first allowed astronomers to measure the distance between Earth to the Sun) becomes clear. Parallax means that when the transit is viewed from widely separated points on Earth's surface, Venus appears to follow a different path in front of the Sun's disc. Precise observations of the duration of the transit -- together with an accurate measurement of the distance between the observation points -- means that the distance to Venus and to the Sun can be calculated via triangulation.

The images used in the movies were obtained by members of the European Space Astronomy Centre, which is located outside Madrid. Two of the observers, Miguel P?rez Ay?car and Michel Breitfellner are on the science operations planning team for the Venus Express satellite, which has been orbiting Venus since 2006.

P?rez Ay?car said, "During the hours of the transit we were delighted by the slow, delicate, gracious passage of Venus in front of the Sun. A perfect black circle, containing a world in it, moving in front of its looming parent star. How thankful we were to witness it. Now with these movies, we can share a sense of that experience."

Breitfellner said, "In the 18th century people realised that transits of Venus could be used to measure the distance from Earth to the Sun. Teams of astronomers were sent all across the world to measure this effect. The 2012 transit has its own historical importance -- it is the first that has occurred when a spacecraft is in orbit at Venus. Science teams are now working to compare observations of the Venus transit from Earth with simultaneous observations from Venus Express."

Colin Wilson, Operations Scientist for Venus Express, said, "Planetary transits are not just of historical interest, they have acquired a new importance in the study of newly discovered planets around other stars. Because we cannot image exoplanets directly, it is only by studying their transits that we can discover whether they harbour liquid water or other potential 'biomarker' molecules like methane or ozone. The Venus transit is an example much closer to home, offering us a chance to test our understanding of how to interpret transit data. This certainly added extra interest as we watched the Venus transit in June -- particularly knowing it was our last chance that we'd have to wait until 2117 to see the next one!"

Ryan wants Romney to beat Obama 'by acclamation'

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said Thursday that he wants the Republican campaign message to be so detailed and compelling that Mitt Romney will be elected president "by acclamation."

The Wisconsin congressman said at a $1,000-per-plate fundraiser at a Knoxville hotel that the GOP message contrasts with what he called the divisive tactics of President Barack Obama in the closely contested race.

"Since he can't run on hope and change and all these new promises ? because the last ones have been mostly broken ? he will have to divide this country. He will have to distort and distract and try to win by default," Ryan said of the Democratic president. "We want to win by acclamation."

"We want to win by saying, here's who we are, here's what we believe, here's what we're going to do," he said. "And if you elect us, hold us accountable and let's get this done."

Acclamation can be generally defined as an eager expression of praise or approval, though as a political term it is perhaps best known from when delegates forgo a formal roll call in party nominating conventions for a voice vote.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam introduced Ryan at the luncheon and said the event had raised about $1 million for the ticket. Meanwhile, about a dozen protesters lined the street outside the event, banging drums and waving signs criticizing Republican policies.

Polls show Obama widening his lead in several key states amid backlash from a leaked video in which Romney disparages the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income tax as government-dependent Obama supporters who see themselves as victims and won't take responsibility for their own lives.

Ryan in his 16-minute speech to the 300 paying attendees described what he called a "generation transforming" election and criticized Obama's record and philosophy on issues including the economy, welfare and health care.

"It's really a choice between the traditional American ideal of an opportunity society with a safety net, a society of growth and prosperity and upward mobility," he said. "Or the path we're on of a more entrenched welfare state, which inevitably ends up with a debt crisis."

Obama's control over federal budget matters and the national economy needs to come to an end, Ryan said.

"If you want to see how this movie ends ? because we've seen this movie before ? turn on the TV and see what's happening in Europe," he said.

Ryan criticized a provision in Obama's health care law that that requires contraceptives to be available for free for women enrolled in workplace health plans, despite objections by religious organizations. He said that move is a preview of how Obama would govern in a second term.

"When you see him do things like this in a tough election year, imagine what he would do if he was uninhibited from ever having to face the voters again," he said.

A River Runs Through...Gale Crater

The "Hottah" rock outcrop, an ancient stream or river bed (NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)

It?s one thing to spot stuff from orbit above an alien world, quite another to get in close.

Earlier Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter imagery of Gale Crater, now home to NASA?s Curiosity rover, had shown signs of what appeared to be something akin to an ?alluvial fan? spreading downwards from the crater rim. It was extremely tempting to conclude that at some earlier time there had been a flow or flood of liquid water washing into and across a section of the crater floor.

Close up of the crusty stream bed, a larger 'clast' is circled (NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)

Now Curiosity has come across the ground-truth, including a rocky outcrop that is made of gravelly pebbles (clasts) cemented together into a crusty conglomerate. This is a chunk of up-tilted, uplifted ancient stream bed. The pebbles probably originated from the crater rim a few hundred meters higher up and their range of sizes, somewhat rounded shapes and placement all point towards their having been washed and rolled in water that was somewhere between ankle and hip deep.

The view from orbit, color coded to show relative elevation. The alluvial fan from the Gale Crater rim is highlighted (NASA/JPL-Caltech/UofA)

It is a remarkable discovery. A great deal of speculation has been made about the nature of channel-like features across the surface of Mars. Water has always been a prime contender for carving and depositing these structures, and now it really does seem that it once flowed, albeit perhaps temporarily, on the planetary surface to leave this formation of gravel fixed into a mud-like cement.

Today Gale Crater may be drier than the driest desert on Earth, but a long time ago there was at least a brief respite as water gurgled and sparkled in the sunlight on Mars.

In Home Senior Care: Vial of Life | ElderAuthority.com

Vial of Life

I consider myself pretty savvy and informed about aging and senior health issues.? So, last weekend? when I attended the Alzheimer?s Association 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer?s in Dallas, TX. I was surprised to learn about a simple, practical, in home health idea that has been out for at least three years.? I don?t know how I missed it.

Before the walk began I strolled amongst the tables of sponsors who had helped to make the walk such a success.?? Professional Caretakers, Inc., a professional home health care agency in Texas, was distributing a pretty blue bottle labeled the Vial of Life.

The Vial of Life is a way to make your medical and health records available to family and emergency professionals should you have a medical emergency.? I have done this for me and my husband by maintaining up-to-date records of our contact information, medical histories, prescriptions, allergies, and insurance information in a spreadsheet on my computer. I keep a printout in a folder by the front door.

The Vial of Life takes it a couple of steps further.? It is a community-based program that provides lifesaving Information for Emergencies.?? The Vial contains a page that you can fill out with Primary Medical Conditions, Health Information, Current Medications, Previous Medical Conditions, and Emergency Contacts.? In addition the Vial contains a refrigerator magnet. ? The paper work is placed inside the pretty blue bottle, which is then placed visibly in the refrigerator.? Emergency workers are trained to look for a Vial of Life sticker or magnet either by the front door or on the refrigerator.

Providing your medical information to emergency personnel could save your life or the life of a family member.

I took two Vials? home with me, placed my records in one and my husbands records in the other.? The magnet is now on the refrigerator door and we have yet one more safety net in place.? Some times the best things in life really are free.

Understanding The World Of Internet Marketing ? Tips For You ...

Internet marketing is essential for any business owner in this day and age. There are a ton of ways in which you can target new customers and drum up business. A lot of these techniques are very affordable and work well. This article will assist you in marketing online and help to boost your business to the next level.

You should use your email settings to attach a signature to every email sent. On the internet, your email signature is the equivalent of your business card. You can increase traffic and revenue to your site by offering to show people your business via email.

TIP! Use headlines throughout your site and articles. These should have some pizzazz to them, so that you can catch your visitor?s attention.

In the eyes of your customer, their experience of your business website is akin to visiting a retail showroom. Test ads, graphics, links and your checkout system on a regular basis. If your website is too hard to navigate, it will turn away customers and they may never come back.

Create your own videos of yourself describing your product. Customers love seeing products in use, so take advantage of this fact and make a promotional video. Use this platform to fully outline features and benefits of your product that can be missed in the advertising. You can post these videos on a personal blog or a video hosting site such as YouTube.

Make use of the websites that list freebies and giveaways by listing what you are offering on these sites. Several directories, for example, have free e-zines. There are several directories for e-books, dictionaries, and other helpful materials.

TIP! Few things incite potential customers to make a purchase like a juicy, limited-time offer. Consider offering a special discount or free gift to people who buy your products within a certain time frame.

Use the emphasis tags that HTML provides when creating your website copy. You can emphasize a single word using tags to underline, bold, or italicize it. This will help to ascertain how you would like your customer to perceive a precise message, which will assist with the explicitness of your communication.

Build a fantastic website and concentrate on SEO content once you have your site finished. If you have a website, start out with this step. If your site is functional and visually appealing, your future workload will be reduced.

The more ways you offer to take payments, the simpler it is for customers to purchase items on your site. Even if you?re using an e-wallet like PayPal, some people might have MoneyBookers or only a credit card. Diversify your payment options.

TIP! HTML tags are very important for optimizing your website for search engines. Tags are used to highlight your key content.

Think of your endeavor as a hobby rather than a job. The potential for a good income will depend on your skills as a marketer, so try to just enjoy what you are doing first.

Offer something free with your business name and logo on it. If you plan to offer a free e-book, you can submit it to sites that provide e-books at no charge. There are many different sites that supply freebies, e-zines and articles that you can attempt to submit to.

Pay attention to the small details on your site. Place your title in the upper right corner on each page with a summary of what your site strives to provide to them. This will help your visitors understand your site no matter where they end up.

TIP! Up the fun factor of your site to draw in more customers. Customers regularly look for free games to play online, and even a simple game will draw many of them back to your site again and again.

Make sure your site comes up on Google searches. There are so many people using Google everyday to locate things, and you want to be able to be found by the people looking for your company?s products and services. Your website will be easier for web crawler to index if you are listed on directories and registered with the search engines.

As has been revealed earlier, internet marketing is an amazing way to reach out to customers and to bring attention to your business and products. The opportunities are endless and the benefits are immense. By utilizing the information in the article, you can build your customer base and bring new recognition to your company.

Gold and Silver Blog: Investing in Physical Gold rather than ETF

Reducing the Risks of Investing in Physical Gold :
Gold Bullion International CEO Savneet Singh on the benefits of investing in physical gold rather than an ETF.

ETF or Exchange-Traded Fund. By attracting those looking to invest in nontraditional assets and sectors, the global ETF market has inflated to more than a trillion dollars in assets over the past few years...some put that number now at about 2 trillion dollars. "Gold held in the Trust's unallocated gold account and any Authorized Participant's unallocated gold account will not be segregated from the Custodian's assets. If the Custodian becomes insolvent, its assets may not be adequate to satisfy a claim by the Trust or any Authorized Participant." So if the custodian runs into trouble, it may not be able to make good on your claim. If anything, it should reinforce the idea that you should buy physical gold/silver bullion or trade with an ETF that? trades only in fully-allocated, good-delivery gold/silver. I would recommend buying physical and knowing exactly where you can sell it in in your area for fair price when the time comes to cash out.

News consumption of political stories not enough to retain political knowledge

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A strong democracy depends on smart voters who choose their leaders based on their knowledge of important political issues. One of the ways that Americans learn about politics is by following the news. Now, researchers from the University of Missouri School of Journalism have found that simply following the news is not enough.

A panel survey involving more than 1,200 teenagers from 12 to 17 years of age found that adolescents learn more about politics when they think and talk about what they read or watch on the news. Edson Tandoc, a doctoral student at MU, found that adolescents who spend more time thinking and talking about the news with their peers and relatives tend to know more about political developments in the country.

"This is important because an individual's political identity begins long before one is eligible to vote," Tandoc said. "Our political identity is not shaped overnight and so it is important to start molding our future voters while they are still young."

Tandoc and his adviser, Esther Thorson, a professor and associate dean for graduate studies and research in the MU School of Journalism, analyzed two surveys conducted six months apart. The first survey, conducted six months before the 2008 presidential elections, asked teenagers how frequently they followed the news, how much they thought about the news, and how often they discussed political news with their peers and relatives. The second survey conducted right after the elections asked the same teenagers several questions about politics to measure their levels of political knowledge.

What Tandoc found is that news consumption does not directly lead to political knowledge. Instead, news consumption leads to thinking about the news which then leads to engagement in discussions about the news, which finally ends with political learning.

"Engaging teenagers in the political process is vital for the future of democracy," Tandoc said. "Our study shows that if parents and educators want to increase political knowledge and action among younger generations, it is important to involve them in discussions about what they are reading in the news. Just giving them a story to read is not enough. Teenagers need to be able to think through and talk about political issues in order to retain knowledge about them."

Tandoc and Thorson presented the results of their study during the Association for Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference in Chicago last month.

How to Successfully Invest in Stocks and Make a Passive Income ...

In Part II of my stock investment series, we go beyond the basics of financial statements and look at measures of corporate health. After enjoying this investment alphabet soup, you will definitely become a better investor.

In last week?s post on investing in stocks, I outlined how you could go through a company?s SEC statements such as the income statement and balance sheet to gain a better feel of its financial health- and also whether you should invest in its stock. I?ve also discussed how dividend stocks can help you attain a passive income. However, there are many other quick and useful measures of a company?s financial health that you can take advantage of. These measures, also commonly called fundamentals, come in handy especially when you are comparing companies in the same industry or wondering if it?s time to sell a given stock. So, without further ado, here are some fundamentals to examine when you are evaluating a company stock:

EPS

EPS (earnings per share) was briefly mentioned last week as the net income a company generates divided by its number of shares. If the company also pays a dividend, that sum is subtracted from net income before that income is divided by share number. This is something to keep in mind when investing in companies that appear to have low reported EPS, such as the REIT stocks Armour Residential (ticker: ARR) or Resource Capital Corp. (ticker: RSO); many companies have a low EPS because they pay out a significant portion of their earnings as dividends.

In essence, EPS is a measure of a company?s profitability. Furthermore, EPS is not always a positive number; companies can post considerable earnings losses or no earnings whatsoever. More than anything else, a company?s reported EPS is a big event in the investment world; investors and analysts eagerly await the day that companies post their quarter or annual earnings in EPS. A reported EPS that beats estimates can cause a company stock to skyrocket; conversely, an EPS report that misses analysts? estimates can result in a huge stock price drop.

P/E ratio

The P/E (price over earnings) ratio is a measure of a company?s stock price over its annual earnings per share. The P/E is used to judge the value of a stock in terms of how much investors are paying for it; for example, the current P/E of Amazon (ticker: AMZN) is a whopping 316, indicating that its valuation has gone sky-high and the stock currently trades at 316 times its annual earnings. Such high investor expectations for Amazon could easily be dashed, however, causing the stock price to plummet (i.e., undergo a correction).

On the other hand, Altria Group (ticker: MO) has a P/E of just over 15, meaning that it trades at 15 times its annual earnings. This stock is still valuable and is probably not overhyped by investors to the point of being prone to a correction. Incidentally, when a stock is touted as being undervalued or overvalued, the term is being applied to its low or high P/E, respectively.

The P/E is both an emotional and logical measure of a stock?s perceived worth and will vary by industry. Investors love sexy tech stocks like Amazon, which is one reason why its P/E is so high. On a more rational level, though, Amazon is also investing heavily into its business to become and stay #1 in the online marketplace. Investors who follow the company?s financial reports know that Amazon?s retained earnings are a big part of shareholder?s equity, a point I touched on in last week?s investment article. However, Amazon?s high P/E could easily fall if investors suddenly become spooked about the company or its management.

Alternately, because smoking has fallen out of favor with many people, Altria Group?s P/E is just over 15. However, the company makes solid earnings every year and even pays a sizeable dividend. Altria investors are thus less likely to become scared that the stock is overvalued and sell their holdings. This is also reflected in Altria?s low beta, the next stock parameter we will be studying.

Beta

The beta is a measure of a stock?s volatility relative to an index such as the S&P 500 over a period of time. It is a useful parameter to study if you are considering investing in a stock simply to gain its dividend (something I like to call dividend poaching) or are looking to invest in a stock for less than a year. Beta is also useful if you are wondering when you should invest in a particular stock in order to minimize risk and maximize return.

The beta is actually a slope of the stock?s trendline (Remember your high school algebra and y = mx +b? The beta is the m) and can range from negative to positive. If a stock?s beta is 1.0, that means that its price rises and falls in sync with the market?s. A stock beta of 1.4 indicates that this stock is 40% more volatile than the market while a beta of 0.5 indicates that the stock is 50% less volatile than the market. For example, if the stock of a company like Widgets-R-Us (ticker: WRU) has a beta of 1.2, that means that should the market gain 10% in a year, WRU will be up by 12% (or an additional 20% of that 10%). Should the market fall 20% in a year, WRU will fall 24% (or an additional 20% of that 20%).

Conversely, if the company has a beta of 0.5, its stock will fall only 50% compared to that of the market. Thus, should the market fall 20% in a year, WRU will fall by only 10% (or only 50% of 20%). There is a useful online tutorial if you really want to explore the concept and even calculate your own stock?s beta.

Beta is useful because it allows you to predict how a company stock will behave relative to the overall market. Predictability is good if you are risk-averse or need to time your trades in order to gain company dividends and then quickly sell to buy the next dividend-bearing stock (i.e., dividend poach). Likewise, let?s say you have some money to invest in the market but will need it in a year or less to buy a car or house (not recommended, by the way, but I?ve certainly done it). In such a case, you could invest your cash in a company stock that has a low beta, helping to ensure that you don?t lose your original sum- unless, of course, the entire market starts heading down. The criticism to this approach is that you probably shouldn?t invest money that you will need in a year or less.

D/E

The debt to equity ratio is another good measure of a company?s ability to successfully handle its finances. If you think of the company as a person you?re about to lend money to, would you want to lend money to a person who works a minimum wage job yet has massive credit card bills, two car payments, a? mortgage and is paying child support? Even if this individual has big plans for the future, would you trust that your loan will be repaid? A company should be similarly scrutinized.

The debt to equity ratio is calculated using the following formula:

D/E = Total Liabilities/Shareholder Equity

Total liabilities include business loans, mortgages and supplies- in essence, the total leverage potential of the company. This is divided by what the shareholders (as well as the company) have invested into the company. A company with a high D/E ratio may be rewarded by bigger earnings the following quarter or year; however, it may also stagnate under high interest payments and growing pains. A higher D/E ratio tends to raise the company?s beta too. Over time, you generally want to see this ratio decrease.

Incidentally,?if you?ve ever obtained a loan, your personal D/E ratio was likely calculated by the lending institution or bank.

P/B ratio

The price to book ratio or P/B is, just like the P/E, another measure of a stock?s perceived worth. The formula for this ratio is the following:

P/B = Stock price/Book Equity (BE = Assets ? Intangible Assets + Liabilities)

Assets are defined as cash, inventory, accounts receivable and equipment while liabilities are items such as loans, mortgages and accounts payable. Intangible assets are assets that are certainly valuable to the company but are harder to liquidate; examples include intellectual property, copyrights and trademarks. Thus, book equity is what would be left over if the company went bankrupt and had to liquidate.

A stock with a P/B ratio less than or equal to 3 might be a great bargain or it might have some fundamental issues. Because of this ambiguity, the P/B ratio should never be used as the only measure of a stock?s true value. Some reasons include the following:

1. The P/B ratio favors ?old school? companies with a lot of assets.

2. Intangible assets are not accounted for or they are viewed as liabilities. This ignores many research, technology and service-based companies.

3. Events like acquisitions and share repurchases artificially deflate or inflate the P/B ratio, respectively.

Because P/B does not provide a complete picture of corporate health in and of itself, it should be paired with another parameter: the ROE.

ROE

Return on equity is defined as a company?s net income divided by its shareholders? equity:

ROE = Net Income/Shareholders? Equity

The ROE restates the EPS but on a hard, dollar-to-dollar basis instead of just dividing the company?s earnings by its number of shares (which can be increased or repurchased anyway). A company?s ROE and P/B should rise and fall with respect to each other- if they don?t, something is intrinsically wrong with the company. After all, a company with a high ROE should attract investors who bid a higher price on the stock. In some cases, though, a company might have a high P/B yet a low ROE. This indicates that company growth in terms of its stock price has not translated to improved company profitability. Without increased profits, shareholder value will stagnate. As such, this company would be a company to steer clear of.

ROI

The whole point of investing is for you to achieve an ROI or return on investment. The most basic ROI can be calculated using the following formula:

ROI = (Gain ? Cost)/Cost

While the formula itself seems self-explanatory, remember that stock gains can include dividends, price appreciation or both. Alternately, you may have stock depreciation mixed in with dividends. Then there are the costs to consider, some of which include trading fees and taxes as well as your original investment sum. It?s important to track these numbers because you certainly want to see a return on your investment.

Also, the IRS taxes you at different levels on dividends as well as short and long-term capital gains. Rumors abound that dividends will soon be taxed as regular income. Capital gains taxes could increase from their current 15% maximum to 20% maximum for long-term investments. Meanwhile, short-term capital gains are being taxed at regular income tax levels.

Taxation of your hard-won stock trading profits is the biggest reason why holding onto stocks for at least one year (or longer) is recommended. Other recommendations for maximizing your ROI will be discussed next week in my ongoing article series on how to successfully invest in stocks and make a passive income.

September 23, 2012 at 6:00 AM by Gant Team ? ?

STATE COLLEGE ? PennDOT?s work to improve safety and ease traffic congestion continues on state Route 3018, Whitehall Road/University Drive, in State College. The three-mile project stretches from Route 26 to Atherton Street.

This PennDOT job is a separate and different project than Ferguson Township?s Whitehall Road project. Once PennDOT?s work is complete in the fall of 2013, travel along Route 3018 will be smoother, less congested and more efficient.

Activity the week of Sept. 24 will include:

  • Paving from the Campbell Road intersection to the Atherton Street intersection.
  • Waterline relocation work from the Blue Course Drive intersection to the Waupelani Drive intersection.
  • Pipe and inlet placement from the Research Drive intersection to the Waupelani Drive intersection.
  • Grading, sub-base placement and under-drain placement from the Blue Course Drive intersection to the Waupelani Drive intersection.
  • Excavation and embankment placement from the Research Drive intersection to the Waupelani Drive intersection.
  • Sidewalk placement and cleanup at the Atherton Street intersection.

Drivers need to be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting construction areas. Motorists should be aware that traffic may be controlled by flaggers at various locations through the project area between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

PennDOT reminds motorists that bicyclists are known to be in the area. Motorists are asked to please use caution when driving near bicyclists, and to share the road and remain alert for bicyclists entering and using the highway. Drivers also need to be alert for pedestrians crossing the roadway.

Overall work includes roadway-widening, addition of a center left turn lane, addition of marked bicycle lanes, new traffic signals, drainage improvements, water line relocation and roadway paving. All work is weather and schedule dependent. HRI Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $10.3 million project.

Myanmar President Says China Friendship Won?t Change

CDT previously reported Myanmar?s parliament would assess the country?s relationship with China. As Myanmar transitions to democracy, President Thein Sein told Chinese Vice President, Xi Jinping, Myanmar?s friendship with China would not change, from Reuters:

Chinese officials and media have expressed concern Washington?s renewed interest in slowly democratizing Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, could be part of U.S. designs to dilute China?s influence there and encircle China with pro-U.S. states.

But during a meeting on the sidelines of a trade fair in southern China, Thein Sein said Beijing should not worry.

?Myanmar is at present in a transitional phase, but Myanmar pays great attention to developing relations with China, and its policy of seeing China has a true friend has not changed,? China?s foreign ministry cited Thein Sein as telling Xi.

?China has for a long time provided a large amount of sincere support and help, and stood at Myanmar?s side at the most difficult of times. Myanmar?s people will never forget this,? Thein Sein added, in the statement released late Friday.

China has worried about its relationship with Myanmar due to the stop of the controversial dam project in the Irrawaddy River, and Chinese media has had mixed reactions over the ending of censorship in Myanmar. The Asian Correspondent reports China has persuaded Myanmar to maintain the status quo:

President of Burma Thein Sein will have a trip to the United States after concluding his China trip. He has been visiting China for a trade fair since 18 September. It is Thein Sein?s second trip to China from the time when he became head of state in March 2011.

President Thein Sein has planned to attend the 9th China-Asean Expo and the China-Asean Investment Summit. The 9th?Expo in Nanning aims to promote economic cooperation between China and ASEAN. Burma was rewarded the trade fair?s ?Country of Honor? this year and President spoke at the opening ceremony on behalf of the ASEAN-member states launch the event which runs from September 19 to 24.

It looks as if China has been trying to keep Burma within its influential sphere since the ASEAN-member country has also been seeking to?join in the US-led Cobra Gold military exercise in the Pacific. A senior Thai army officer was quoted by Japan?s Kyodo News saying that Burma expressed an interest in joining the Cobra Gold annual military exercises in the future. China may be concerned about military relations between Burma and the US to some extent.

According to CRIEnglish, Xi is urging Myanmar to ensure smooth implementation of projects between the two countries:

Xi said the two countries should continue to strengthen communication and coordination to accelerate the formulation of mid-term and long-term goals of bilateral exchanges in politics, economy, trade, culture, security and other areas to steadily push forward comprehensive cooperation.

The current development of China-Myanmar relations is generally good, Xi said, noting that China is ready to work with Myanmar to promote the healthy and stable development of the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

The vice president said that China will continue to encourage Chinese enterprises to make investment in the livelihoods of Myanmar?s people and other areas. China is also ready to work with Myanmar in agricultural cooperation.

Macho image fades as Russia's Putin nears 60

MOSCOW - As Vladimir Putin's 60th birthday approaches, a wave of biting satire is starting to hurt his macho image.

Back in the Kremlin since May, the former KGB spy faces the biggest protests of his long rule and ratings that an independent pollster says have slipped below 50 percent. His image, says a former Kremlin spin-doctor, may need rebranding.

Vote-winning antics such as horse-riding bare-chested, or shooting a tiger with a tranquiliser dart now open him to ridicule reminiscent of that directed at Boris Yeltsin, the vodka-swilling leader he replaced 12 years ago.

Putin has long cultivated a sober and vigorous image in contrast with Yeltsin. His spokesman said he was paying little attention to his birthday on October 7 because of his passion for his job.

Many analysts say he will seek another six-year term when his mandate ends in 2018. He has no obvious successor and a strong hold on business in the country of 140 million, a major oil and gas producer.

"Putin is still the guy you have to go to for approval on any major business decision," said a senior Western executive based in Moscow. "He is still the ultimate arbiter."

The satire is focused on the Internet, which has helped remove the shackles on criticism and has proved a growing influence in Russia as a forum where Putin's opponents announce their protests.

At times it portrays Putin as a buffoon, the image that haunted Yeltsin, who once picked up a baton and conducted a band after a champagne lunch in Germany, and on another occasion played the spoons on the head of the president of Kyrgyzstan.

When Putin donned white baggy overalls and goggles to fly in a light aircraft alongside endangered migrating cranes this month, doctored pictures and jokes spread across the Internet and social networking sites in minutes.

The "Flight of hope", intended to show cranes born in captivity how to follow a leader in a flock, was quickly mocked by a blogger who said "we all lost hope long ago".

A video montage on Youtube showed doctored images of Putin with a yellow beak and in flight in a Superman costume. In a nod to a leaked U.S. diplomatic cable calling Putin an Alpha-dog, a cartoon showed him telling other cranes: "I am the Alpha crane."

    5. Protesters oust Benghazi militia group
    6. Romney paid 14.1 percent effective tax rate in 2011
    7. For 1st time, gay marriage may win statewide vote

Putin has laughed off the jokes and hit back, tongue-in-cheek, by describing his opponents as "birds who do not like to fly in a flock and prefer to nest individually".

'Tsar without substance'
Such comments have only spawned more jokes.

"There were always plenty of reasons (to satirize Putin). I even feel a bit sorry for him now because he's not as confident as he was a few years ago," Sergei Yolkin, a cartoonist who has regularly poked fun at the president, said by telephone.

"He's been at a bit of a loss for the past year and you can see it in his public relations efforts."

When he announced a year ago that he planned to return to the presidency for six more years, making it likely he would rule for as long as Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, a picture did the rounds of Putin's face imposed on a portrait of Brezhnev, prematurely aged and decrepit. Brezhnev's rule is associated with stagnation, a fear some Russians have of Putin's new term.

When Putin said last December he mistook the white ribbons worn by protesters for condoms, a doctored photo appeared of Putin with a condom pinned to his chest instead of a medal.

Former Kremlin spin doctor Gleb Pavlovsky said Putin's public relations efforts were clearly now failing and described him as resembling a "tsar without any substance."

"He seriously needs rebranding," Pavlovsky said. "Russians like to joke, and the jokes about Putin have become nasty. Many people have got tired of him."

Putin's supporters still hold him up as the man who saved Russia from collapse after inheriting from Yeltsin a country that was in chaos a decade after the Soviet Union fell apart.

Putin reined in Russia's independent-minded regions including Chechnya, where he launched the second of two wars against separatist rebels, and his tough anti-Western rhetoric helped restore Russians' national pride.

"He still has support among a large part of the population, especially in the provinces," said opinion pollster Lev Gudkov.

'Workaholic'
The impact of the web-based satire is hard to gauge. The Internet World Stats website said there were almost 61.5 million Internet users in Russia in 2011, more than 44 percent of the population, but researcher eMarketer said only 10 percent of users in Russia were over 55.

Putin plays to this audience by showing he leads an active lifestyle and is physically strong. He still practices judo, a sport in which has a black belt, the top level of accomplishment, and he swims and plays ice hockey regularly.

"He doesn't pay all that much attention to his birthday. I don't think he notices it because he's an absolute workaholic," said his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.

For all the satire, there are plenty of Russians who will want to celebrate Putin's birthday.

Tajik singer Tolibzhon Kurbankhanov has released a song and video called "Happy Birthday Mr President". It appears not to be a parody and is a follow-up to "VVP (Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin) which begins: "Let's sit and remember together those years/ When he wasn't here, we had just fear."

A year ago, a group of young women marked Putin's 59th birthday by recording a video of themselves in little more than their blouses and underwear baking him a birthday cake.

Some of Putin's critics say the satire has not hit home.

"I think Putin has shown over the past two years that he is not really bothered by the jokes," said Alexander Yelin, lyricist of the group Rabfak which has performed at anti-Putin rallies, and writer of the song 'Our madhouse votes for Putin'.

"We don't like what's being done in the country but the illness is there and the medication isn't working."

Although support in the provinces helped Putin win almost two-thirds of the votes in the March presidential election, Gudkov's independent Levada polling group said last month that 48 percent of Russians now had a positive view of him compared to 60 percent in May.

He also faces persistent protests demanding he quit, and his response has been tough. Laws have been toughened on protests, defamation and Internet use, homes of protest organisers have been raided, one has been expelled from parliament and he and another face the threat of jail on charges they deny.

Three young women from the Pussy Riot punk band were jailed in August after belting out a profanity-laced anti-Putin protest near the altar of Moscow's main Russian Orthodox cathedral.

Although Putin crushed the rebellion in Chechnya and set about restoring central Kremlin control over the sprawling country, he faces renewed Islamist insurrection in the area.

He has appealed for calm and religious tolerance and warned that violence could spread and tear Russia apart, messages which resonate with many voters who still mourn the Soviet Union.

His prime minister and protege, Dmitry Medvedev, who sat in the Kremlin for four years as president while Putin became the paramount leader as premier - the constitution barred him from seeking a third straight term - is widely seen as out of favor.

Putin's allies - many of them rich businessmen, colleagues from when he worked as a city adviser in St Petersburg and fellow KGB veterans - have given no hint of transferring their support to anyone else and the opposition remains divided.

"As long as he can hold out promises through social policy, and support state-owned enterprises and increases in pensions - state populism, one might say - Putin will retain his support base," Gudkov said.)
