The British government today announced that Gary McKinnon, a British hacker with a condition that has been diagnosed as Asperger's syndrome, will not be extradited to the United States. But while the decision is nominally about his human rights, it may also be a byproduct of a longstanding debate over the US-Britain extradition treaty, which British critics say is weighted too much in favor of US interests.

British Home Secretary Theresa May today told the House of Commons that she had withdrawn the extradition order against Mr. McKinnon after determining that extraditing him would violate his human rights, BBC News reports.

Mr McKinnon is accused of serious crimes. But there is also no doubt that he is seriously ill. He has Asperger's syndrome, and suffers from depressive illness. The legal question before me is now whether the extent of that illness is sufficient to preclude extradition.

After careful consideration of all of the relevant material, I have concluded that Mr McKinnon's extradition would give rise to such a high risk of him ending his life that a decision to extradite would be incompatible with Mr McKinnon's human rights.

Ms. May said that it would now be up to the director of public prosecutions to determine whether McKinnon would face charges in Britain.

McKinnon is accused of breaking into nearly 100 NASA and US military computers between 2001 and 2002, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, and is charged in Virginia and New Jersey on eight counts of computer fraud. Lawyers for McKinnon said that he was merely looking for evidence of UFOs and did not have any criminal intent. The Daily Telegraph reported in 2009 that McKinnon's supporters say he is being made a scapegoat for US failures to secure its computers, which McKinnon has called "ridiculously easy" to hack.

US lawyer David Rivkin, an adviser to the Reagan and Bush administrations, told the BBC that the decision to deny extradition for McKinnon?on health grounds was "laughable" and that "under that logic, anybody who claims some kind of physical or mental problem can commit crimes with impunity and get away with it." British solicitor Edward Fitzgerald told The Guardian that he felt McKinnon's case turned on his alleged high suicide risk.

While May said in her statement that the "sole issue" before her was McKinnon's human rights, her decision not to extradite McKinnon comes amid public debate in Britain over the country's extradition responsibilities, particularly those in its treaty with the US.

Critics say that the US-Britain treaty, enacted in 2003, favors US interests over British ones. The Guardian's Owen Bowcott points out that between January 2004 and October 2012, 92 people have been extradited from Britain to the US, while only 43 have made the opposite trip. He also notes, however, that between January 2004 and December 2011, Britain made 57 requests for extradition and 40 extraditions took place, while the US made 134 requests during that same period, and only 75 extraditions occurred.

In announcing her decision on McKinnon, May called the US-Britain treaty "broadly sound," reports The Guardian.? But May added that she would introduce a new "forum bar" to the extradition process, which would allow a court to deny extradition if it deemed a British trial more fair to the accused than a trial overseas, reports The Guardian. May also said that she planned to end the home secretary's ability to deny extradition on human rights grounds ? the very grounds she used to bar McKinnon's extradition ? arguing that such discretion would be better placed in the courts than in the government's hands.?

May's proposed reforms to the US extradition process are just part of a broader overhaul by the British government to its approach to international justice. The Washington Post reports that May also announced that Britain would be?opting out of more than 100 criminal justice measures?with the European Union and reinstating selected measures. The Post writes that the move "appeared aimed at satisfying Conservative lawmakers who have grown increasingly skeptical of the E.U.?s reach in British affairs."

Biogen third-quarter profit rises, as does 2012 forecast

(Reuters) - Biogen Idec Inc reported much higher-than-expected third-quarter profit on Thursday on increased sales of its drugs for multiple sclerosis and cancer, and the U.S. biotechnology company raised its full-year earnings forecast.

Biogen shares rose 2 percent in premarket trading.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.91 per share, topping analysts' average expectations by 31 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Biogen now expects 2012 earnings of $6.40 per share to $6.50 per share, excluding items, up from its prior view of earnings above $6.20.

The company also now expects 2012 revenue growth to be in the mid-to-high single digits in percentage terms, compared with 2011. It had forecast growth in the mid-single digits.

However, most investors are focused on Biogen's experimental oral MS drug BG-12, which is expecting a U.S. approval decision around March after the Food and Drug Administration earlier this month said it had extended a review of the medicine by three months.

Biogen shares have nearly doubled during the last 18 months, driven primarily by enthusiasm over the impressive data for BG-12, also known as dimethyl fumarate. Once approved, BG-12 is expected to become the most widely used MS drug with annual sales in excess of $1 billion.

Biogen's net profit in the third quarter rose to $398 million, or $1.67 per share, from $354 million, or $1.43 per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $1.39 billion, a tad above Wall Street estimates of $1.38 billion.

Sales of the MS drug Avonex rose 8 percent to $736 million. Biogen reported that its revenue from its other multiple sclerosis treatment Tysabri dipped 1 percent to $275 million.

Irish drugmaker Elan Corp, Biogen's Tysabri marketing partner, previously reported worldwide sales of $404 million for the quarter, with U.S. sales of the infused drug higher than expected, while sales outside the United States fell short of analysts' estimates.

Biogen said its revenue for Rituxan, the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and rheumatoid arthritis drug it co-markets with Roche, rose 8 percent to $288 million.

Biogen Idec shares rose to $145.03 in premarket trading from Wednesday's Nasdaq close at $142.06.

New analysis provides fuller picture of human expansion from Africa

A new, comprehensive review of humans' anthropological and genetic records gives the most up-to-date story of the "Out of Africa" expansion that occurred about 45,000 to 60,000 years ago.

This expansion, detailed by three Stanford geneticists, had a dramatic effect on human genetic diversity, which persists in present-day populations. As a small group of modern humans migrated out of Africa into Eurasia and the Americas, their genetic diversity was substantially reduced.

In studying these migrations, genomic projects haven't fully taken into account the rich archaeological and anthropological data available, and vice versa. This review integrates both sides of the story and provides a foundation that could lead to better understanding of ancient humans and, possibly, genomic and medical advances.

"People are doing amazing genome sequencing, but they don't always understand human demographic history" that can help inform an investigation, said review co-author Brenna Henn, a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at the Stanford School of Medicine who has a PhD in anthropology from Stanford. "We wanted to write this as a primer on pre-human history for people who are not anthropologists."

This model of the Out of Africa expansion provides the framework for testing other anthropological and genetic models, Henn said, and will allow researchers to constrain various parameters on computer simulations, which will ultimately improve their accuracy.

"The basic notion is that all of these disciplines have to be considered simultaneously when thinking about movements of ancient populations," said Marcus Feldman, a professor of biology at Stanford and the senior author of the paper. "What we're proposing is a story that has potential to explain any of the fossil record that subsequently becomes available, and to be able to tell what was the size of the population in that place at that time."

The anthropological information can inform geneticists when they investigate certain genetic changes that emerge over time. For example, geneticists have found that genes for lactose intolerance and gluten sensitivity began to emerge in populations expanding into Europe around 10,000 years ago.

The anthropological record helps explain this: It was around this time that humans embraced agriculture, including milk and wheat production. The populations that prospered - and thus those who survived to pass on these mutations - were those who embraced these unnatural food sources. This, said Feldman, is an example of how human movements drove a new form of natural selection.

Populations that expand from a small founding group can also exhibit reduced genetic diversity - known as a "bottleneck" - a classic example being the Ashkenazi Jewish population, which has a fairly large number of genetic diseases that can be attributed to its small number of founders. When this small group moved from the Rhineland to Eastern Europe, reproduction occurred mainly within the group, eventually leading to situations in which mothers and fathers were related. This meant that offspring often received the same deleterious gene from each parent and, as this process continued, ultimately resulted in a population in which certain diseases and cancers are more prevalent.

"If you know something about the demographic history of populations, you may be able to learn something about the reasons why a group today has a certain genetic abnormality - either good or bad," Feldman said. "That's one of the reasons why in our work we focus on the importance of migration and history of mixing in human populations. It helps you assess the kinds of things you might be looking for in a first clinical assessment. It doesn't have the immediacy of prescribing chemotherapy - it's a more general look at what's the status of human variability in DNA, and how might that inform a clinician."

Kansas case puts face on 'total identity theft'

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) ? When Candida L. Gutierrez's identity was stolen, the thief didn't limit herself to opening fraudulent credit and bank accounts. She assumed Gutierrez's persona completely, using it to get a job, a driver's license, a mortgage and even medical care for the birth of two children.

All the while, the crook claimed the real Gutierrez was the one who had stolen her identity. The women's unusual tug-of-war puts a face on "total identity theft," a brazen form of the crime in which con artists go beyond financial fraud to assume many other aspects of another person's life.

The scheme has been linked to illegal immigrants who use stolen Social Security numbers to get paid at their jobs, and authorities fear the problem could soon grow to ensnare more unsuspecting Americans.

"When she claimed my identity and I claimed it back, she was informed that I was claiming it too," said Gutierrez, a 31-year-old elementary schoolteacher. "She knew I was aware and that I was trying to fight, and yet she would keep fighting. It is not like she realized and she stopped. No, she kept going, and she kept going harder."

A 32-year-old illegal immigrant named Benita Cardona-Gonzalez is accused of using Gutierrez's identity during a 10-year period when she worked at a Topeka company that packages refrigerated foods.

For years, large numbers of illegal immigrants have filled out payroll forms using their real names but stolen Social Security numbers. However, as electronic employment verification systems such as E-Verify become more common, the use of fake numbers is increasingly difficult. Now prosecutors worry that more people will try to fool the systems by assuming full identities rather than stealing the numbers alone.

For victims, total identity theft can also have serious health consequences if electronic medical records linked to Social Security numbers get mixed up, putting at risk the accuracy of important patient information such as blood types or life-threatening allergies.

Federal Trade Commission statistics show that Americans reported more than 279,000 instances of identity theft in 2011, up from 251,100 a year earlier. While it is unclear how many of those cases involve total identity theft, one possible indicator is the number of identity theft complaints that involve more than one type of identity theft ? 13 percent last year, compared with 12 percent a year earlier.

Nationwide, employment-related fraud accounted for 8 percent of identity theft complaints last year. But in states with large immigrant populations, employment-related identity fraud was much higher: 25 percent in Arizona, 15 percent in Texas, 16 percent in New Mexico, 12 percent in California.

Prosecutors say that the longer a person uses someone else's identity, the more confident the thief becomes using that identity for purposes other than just working.

Once they have become established in a community, identity thieves don't want to live in the shadows and seek a normal life like everybody else. That's when they take the next step and get a driver's license, a home loan and health insurance.

"And so that is a natural progression, and that is what we are seeing," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson, who is prosecuting the case against Gutierrez's imposter.

Gutierrez first learned her identity had been hijacked when she was turned down for a mortgage more than a decade ago. Now each year she trudges to the Social Security Administration with her birth certificate, driver's license, passport and even school yearbooks to prove her identity and clear her employment record.

She spends hours on the phone with creditors and credit bureaus, fills out affidavits and has yet to clean up her credit history. Her tax records are a mess. She even once phoned the imposter's Kansas employer in a futile effort to find some relief.

Both women claimed they were identity theft victims and sought to get new Social Security numbers. The Social Security Administration turned down the request from Gutierrez, instead issuing a new number to the woman impersonating her. And in another ironic twist, Gutierrez was forced to file her federal income tax forms using a special identification number usually reserved for illegal immigrants.

"It is such a horrible nightmare," Gutierrez said. "You get really angry, and then you start realizing anger is not going to help. ... But when you have so much on your plate and you keep such a busy life, it is really such a super big inconvenience. You have to find the time for someone who is abusing you."

When Gutierrez recently got married, her husband began researching identity theft on the Internet and stumbled across identity theft cases filed against other illegal immigrants working at Reser's Fine Foods, the same manufacturer where Cardona-Gonzalez worked. He contacted federal authorities in Kansas and asked them to investigate the employee working there who had stolen his wife's identity.

The alleged imposter was arrested in August, and her fingerprints confirmed that immigration agents had encountered Cardona-Gonzalez in 1996 in Harlingen, Texas, and sent her back to Mexico.

Cardona-Gonzalez did not respond to a letter sent to her at the Butler County jail, where she is awaiting trial on charges of aggravated identity theft, misuse of a Social Security number and production of a false document.

Her attorney, Matthew Works, did not respond to phone calls and emails seeking comment. Court filings indicate the two sides are negotiating a plea agreement.

Citing privacy issues, the Social Security Administration declined to discuss the Gutierrez case. Reser's Fine Foods did not return a message left at its Topeka plant.

Anderson expects more cases of total identity theft "because we all know what is going on out there ? which is thousands and thousands of people who are working illegally in the United States under false identities, mostly of U.S. citizens, and very little is being done about it. But we are doing something about it, one case at a time."

Acer see sales decline in Q3 2012 as customers hold out for Windows 8

Acer has reported a net profit of NT$68 million ($2.3 million) for Q3 of this year, ducking far below many estimates for the Taipei computer maker. According to Reuters, the company isn't offering up any reasons why profits disappointed just yet, and it plans to hold a briefing on Thursday to add more detail on the figures and its outlook. The reported results, currently unavailable direct from Acer, note that consolidated revenue in the third quarter was down 5.6 percent since Q2, although its after-tax profit has improved since then. It's a difficult time to be a PC maker.

A haunting look at antique chests in Lancashire's spookiest ...

There is some seriously spooky fun to be had among the antique chests of Preston?s Hoghton Tower, which is holding a series of Ghost Tours over the Halloween period, including a Midnight Ghost Tour on All Hallows Eve itself.

The ancestral home of the de Hoghton family, and Lancashire?s only true baronial residence, Hoghton Tower is a magnificent fortified manor house, which occupies a commanding hill-top position in the North Preston district. Occupied since the days of William the Conqueror but rebuilt in 1565, the house is renowned for its richly panelled rooms and collection of Tudor and Jacobean furniture, and parts of it are open to the public. It is also known for being the third most haunted house in Great Britain and, between 26 October and 1 November, brave visitors will have a chance to learn some of the secrets surrounding the antique dining tables and ancient fireplaces, while also meeting some of the previous residents.

The Halloween Ghost Tours, held on October 26, 27 and November 1, start with a glass of mulled wine before a silent torchbearer leads guests into darkened halls, where spectres regale them with ghoulish tales from the past. Ghostly footsteps echo along underground passages, an ominous black dog haunts the Well House, and writhing faces appear in a family portrait. On October 31, there will be a special event, with a Halloween Midnight Ghost Tour inclusive of a supper and drinks in the banqueting hall, where spirits of a different kind will help wash away the chills.

One of the most successful indie games of the last years has been the platform game Super Meat Boy, developed by the cleverly named Team Meat.

The game was released in 2010 on Steam and soon caught the attention of critics and players alike for its nostalgic gameplay formula, remiscent of Super Mario Bros and Capcom?s hit Ghosts?n Goblins : a 2d platformer requiring good controls and precise time, the main character Meat Boy will travel through danger infested stages to save his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the evil Dr. Fetus.

The game was also released on Xbox Live Arcade with added content.

The team, while hard at work on the Super Meat Boy sequel, has announced today the development of a new game, started as a ? weekend game jam?, as the developers state on their official site?and evolved in a month or so into a new official game from Team Meat.

The new game will be called Mew-Genics and will involve randomly generated content and, to no one?s surprise, cats!

The development seem to be going on quite nicely as the developers say that they?ll be able to give more details on release dates and platform, gameplay and some screenshots

Team Meat also points out that the development of Super Meat Boy 2 is going strong and won?t be held back by Mew-Genics development.

GRESHAM, Ore. ? Authorities say they have recovered the body of 21-year-old Whitney Heichel, the Starbucks barista from Oregon who went missing earlier this week, and have arrested an acquaintance in her death.

Police arrested 24-year-old Jonathan Holt of Gresham on Friday after several interviews, KGW-TV in Portland reported. Holt was a neighbor and lived in Heichel?s apartment complex. Police did not specify a motive in the woman?s death.

Fight in Store over Bankrupt Battery Maker - 24/7 Wall St.

Bankrupt U.S. battery maker A123 Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE) today got permission from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to use $15.5 million of ?debtor-in-possession? financing from a total of $72.5 million in financing from Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE: JCI). Johnson has offered to pay $125 million for A123?s automotive business.

That ?stalking horse? bid looks appears to be in the sights of Chinese auto parts maker Wanxiang Group, which said that the company intends to bid at auction for A123. Wanxiang also will contest Johnson?s position as the stalking horse bidder for A123. According to a report from Reuters, Wanxiang appeared in bankruptcy court with its own proposal for debtor-in-possession financing, but the judge ruled that Johnson?s loan was acceptable on an interim basis. The court will rule on the stalking horse bids on October 30th.

The Chinese firm had tried to put together a $465 million deal that would have saved A123 from bankruptcy, but was unable to do so because the battery maker could not meet some relatively low lending hurdles.

A123 has received a $249 million grant from the federal government, of which about half remains unspent. The fate of the unspent funds remains unclear, no matter which firm wins an auction for A123. If Wanxiang wins, the sale will be subject to review by the Committee for Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS).

Shares of A123 are up 64% today at $0.123, in a 52-week range of $0.05 to $3.91. More than 46 million shares have changed hands so far today.

California freeway closed for 'Hangover 3' filming

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Drivers are being warned to avoid sections of a Southern California freeway that will be shut down this weekend for filming of the third installment of the "Hangover" movie franchise.

Sections of the 73 Freeway in coastal Orange County will see staggered closures until 7 p.m. Sunday.

To the south, the freeway becomes a toll road. The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/RPgJTK ) that the film's producer, Warner Bros., will pay for lost toll revenues and other costs.

Lori Olin, a spokeswoman for the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor, tells the newspaper the agency will receive at least $25,000, including location fees.

The 2009 blockbuster "The Hangover," about an ill-fated bachelor party trip to Las Vegas, earned over $400 million worldwide. Its 2011 sequel was also a mega hit.

Italy court ruling links mobile phone use to tumor

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's supreme court has upheld a ruling that said there was a link between a business executive's brain tumor and his heavy mobile phone usage, potentially opening the door to further legal claims.

The court's decision flies in the face of much scientific opinion, which generally says there is not enough evidence to declare a link between mobile phone use and diseases such as cancer and some experts said the Italian ruling should not be used to draw wider conclusions about the subject.

"Great caution is needed before we jump to conclusions about mobile phones and brain tumors," said Malcolm Sperrin, director of medical physics and clinical engineering at Britain's Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The Italian case concerned company director Innocenzo Marcolini who developed a tumor in the left side of his head after using his mobile phone for 5-6 hours a day for 12 years. He normally held the phone in his left hand, while taking notes with his right hand.

Marcolini developed a so-called neurinoma affecting a cranial nerve, which was apparently not cancerous but nevertheless required surgery that badly affected his quality of life.

He initially sought financial compensation from the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority INAIL which rejected his application, saying there was no proof his illness had been caused by his work.

But a court in Brescia later ruled there was a causal link between the use of mobile and cordless telephones and tumors.

Italy's supreme court rejected an INAIL appeal against that ruling on October 12 though its decision was only reported on Friday.

It said the lower court's decision was justified and that scientific evidence advanced in support of the claim was reliable. Marcolini's situation had been "different from normal, non-professional use of a mobile telephone", it said.

The evidence was based on studies conducted between 2005-2009 by a group led by Lennart Hardell, a cancer specialist at the University Hospital in Orebro in Sweden. The court said the research was independent and "unlike some others, was not co-financed by the same companies that produce mobile telephones".

Summary:

New Home Builders in Richmond VA ? 2012 Building Trends ...

New home builders in the Richmond, VA area have continued to face a challenging market but there does seem to be light at the end of the tunnel ? they hope it?s not an oncoming train! Home sales and housing starts seem to be getting some greater activity, although the monthly trends have been inconsistent.

At the end of previous years home listings have typically dropped to around 8,000 units. This past year (December 2011) home listings dropped below 6,000 indicating market demand is increasing and buying up the inventory. Additionally, at the end of 2011 the number of bank-owned foreclosures dropped by 35% from prior year. This is certainly good news for home sellers and new home builders in the Richmond, VA market.

However, all has not been so positive with new home construction and real estate trends in 2012. For example, in April there was an increase in sales compared to the prior year, and in May year-over-year sales were up a whopping 26%. However, June saw sales decline by about 2%. In June 2012, the average value of new homes saw a 9.3% rise year-over-year increasing to $322,193 per unit. This rise is smaller than the 10.9% gain in May 2012.

Out of all housing closings, new home closings accounted for 8.8%. This is an increase on a percentage basis, as new home closings were 7.8% of total closings a year ago. Closings of new and existing homes increased year-over-year in May after also rising in April year-over-year.

Along with new home prices, there was an increase year-over-year in the average mortgage size on newly sold homes. Average mortgage size jumped 11.6% to $276,279 in May from a year earlier. Average mortgage size slipped 4.2% in April 2012 from a year earlier. The overall percentage of sale price that was being financed increased 2.1 percentage points year-over-year to 88.1% in May 2012. In April 2012, there was a 2.7 percentage point decline in April from a year earlier.

The average unit size of newly sold homes rose 1.2% year-over-year to 2,635 square feet in May 2012. In April, the average size of new homes sold went from 2,870 square feet a year earlier to 2,519 square feet.

Man Files FCC Complaint Against AT&T - Business Insider

AT&T is blocking longtime customers with unlimited data plans from using a cool new feature available on the latest iPhones: FaceTime video chat over 3G and 4G wireless networks.

One of those customers, an architect living in San Francisco, has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, he told Business Insider.

He and his wife decided to upgrade to the iPhone 5 mainly for the improved camera and FaceTime. He wanted to be able to FaceTime his wife and kids while he traveled. (He asked that we not use his name.)

?"I am one of those AT&T 'unlimited'-data customers who bought a plan when the iPhone first came out," he told us. "I have paid a premium for the unlimited data plan even though I don't really use that much data, thinking that some day it would be useful to have."

Previously, AT&T had only allowed FaceTime video calls over Wi-Fi networks. When Apple announced an upgrade to its operating system this summer, it said FaceTime would now work over high-speed wireless networks.

But AT&T said it would require customers currently on unlimited-data plans to switch to new Mobile Share data plans to use FaceTime, or remain limited to Wi-Fi usage. Mobile Share caps monthly data usage at set levels, and charges fees for overages. Video chats use a lot of data, so FaceTime users may get stuck paying extra.

Some public-interest groups wrote an open letter to AT&T announcing their plans to protest its decision, citing FCC rules about how carriers treat data from apps running on their network. They have yet to file a formal complaint, though. One of those groups, Free Press, told us that FCC rules required them to give AT&T notice in advance before taking such action.

But nothing's holding customers back from filing complaints now. So the customer who spoke to us is urging other customers to take matters into their own hands, like he did.

Filing a consumer complaint, he said, was surprisingly easy to do, and he hopes others in his situation will head over to the FCC website and do the same.

Pew Climate Change Poll Reveals That Less Than Half Of Americans Make Anthropogenic Connection

Recent polling conducted by the Pew Research Center suggests that a greater number of people in the U.S. are accepting the reality of climate change. 67 percent of Americans said that there is "solid evidence" that average global temperatures have been rising in recent decades, signaling a gain of four points since last year and 10 points since 2009. Yet only 42 percent say this warming is "mostly caused by human activity," according to Pew.

In a presidential election marked by accusations of "climate silence" and a lack of forthright discussion of what has been called a "planetary emergency," the Pew polling reveals another stark difference between supporters of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Only 42 percent of Romney supporters say there is strong evidence of global warming and a paltry 18 percent acknowledge its human origin. This 42 percent stands in sharp contrast to the 88 percent of Obama supporters who say that average global temperatures are on the rise and 63 percent who say it is anthropogenic.

Despite these numbers, at least 97 percent of the most actively publishing climate scientists and nearly a dozen of the world's most prominent national science academies acknowledge that the world's climate is changing as a result of increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels. According to the Pew poll, 45 percent of Americans -- including 58 percent of Democrats and 30 percent of Republicans -- answered yes to the question "Do scientists agree earth is getting warmer because of human activity?"

NASA scientist James Hansen recently said, "There's a huge gap between what is understood by the scientific community and what is known by the public."

Amid a year of record temperatures and severe drought, Hansen and his colleagues released a statistical analysis suggesting that the odds are too great for many of the past decade's most extreme weather events to have happened by chance. He wrote in the Washington Post, "our analysis shows that, for the extreme hot weather of the recent past, there is virtually no explanation other than climate change."

The increase in greenhouse gases has also warmed the world's oceans, posing threats to marine life and the food security of island nations. The lead author of a 2012 study on warming oceans, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory climate scientist Peter Gleckler, said, "most of the observed global ocean warming over the past 50 years is attributable to human activities."

According to Pew, these numbers are based on telephone interviews in the first week of October of just over 1,500 American adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Pluto's moons and possible rings may be hazards: New Horizons and the gauntlet it may encounter in 2015

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is now almost seven years into its 9.5-year journey across the solar system to explore Pluto and its system of moons. Just over two years from now, in January 2015, New Horizons will begin encounter operations, which will culminate in a close approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, and the first-ever exploration of a planet in the Kuiper Belt.

As New Horizons has traveled through the solar system, its science team has become increasingly aware of the possibility that dangerous debris may be orbiting in the Pluto system, putting NASA's New Horizons spacecraft and its exploration objectives into harm's way.

"We've found more and more moons orbiting near Pluto -- the count is now up to five," says Dr. Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission and an associate vice president of the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute. "And we've come to appreciate that those moons, as well as others not yet discovered, act as debris generators populating the Pluto system with shards from collisions between those moons and small Kuiper Belt objects."

"Because our spacecraft is traveling so fast -- more than 30,000 miles per hour -- a collision with a single pebble, or even a millimeter-sized grain, could cripple or destroy New Horizons," adds New Horizons Project Scientist Dr. Hal Weaver of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, "so we need to steer clear of any debris zones around Pluto."

The New Horizons team is already using every available tool -- including sophisticated computer simulations of the stability of debris orbiting Pluto, giant ground-based telescopes, stellar occultation probes of the Pluto system, and even the Hubble Space Telescope -- to search for debris in orbit. At the same time, the team is plotting alternative, more distant courses through the Pluto system that would preserve most of the science mission but avert deadly collisions if the current flyby plan is found to be too hazardous.

"We're worried that Pluto and its system of moons, the object of our scientific affection, may actually be a bit of a black widow," says Stern.

"We're making plans to stay beyond her lair if we have to," adds Deputy Project Scientist Dr. Leslie Young of Southwest Research Institute. "From what we have determined, we can still accomplish our main objectives if we have to fly a 'bail-out trajectory' to a safer distance from Pluto. Although we'd prefer to go closer, going farther from Pluto is certainly preferable to running through a dangerous gauntlet of debris, and possibly even rings, that may orbit close to Pluto among its complex system of moons."

Stern concludes: "We may not know whether to fire our engines on New Horizons and bail out to safer distances until just 10 days before reaching Pluto, so this may be a bit of a cliff-hanger. Stay tuned."
