Blue whales use ballet to trick their prey

Like behemoth ballerinas, blue whales pirouette before lunging at their prey, a strategy that may help the giants ambush krill from below.

"This behavior probably improves the whales' chances to engulf the most krill possible," said study co-author Ari Friedlaender, a marine biologist at Duke University.

The new findings, detailed on Tuesday in the journal Biology Letters, may shed light on how the enigmatic creatures hunt and devour their shrimplike prey.

Hungry giants
The blue whale, the world's largest living creature, can span up to 98 feet (30 meters) in length and weigh up to 200 tons (180 metric tons). This creature the size of a submarine uses its bristly, comblike teeth, or baleen, to filter tiny crustaceans called krill from the water. Antarctic whalers who opened up the massive bellies of blue whales often found up to 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) of krill, though the sea giants probably don't eat that much every day, Friedlaender told LiveScience.

Because krill cluster in massive swarms, "they're perfect food for something like a baleen whale that wants to engulf a big amount of something at one time," Friedlaender told LiveScience.

While the marine mammals' diet is well-known, how they find their prey remains a mystery.

To understand these foraging behaviors, Friedlaender and his colleagues attached motion sensors to the backs of 22 blue whales using suction cups. They also attached a critter cam to one individual, which showed the ocean and part of the whale's head from the animal's point of view. [See Video as a Blue Whale Dives for Krill]

Underwater ballet
When Friedlaender's team analyzed the data, they found something completely unexpected.

The sensors, which captured several hours of data from each whale, revealed half of the whales doing full, 360-degree turns. Many of these underwater twirls occurred as whales dove for prey.

A blue whale typically spots a dense krill swarm by the dark patch it leaves on the water's surface as seen from below. Once the swarm is spotted, the whale surges upward toward the dark spot and opens its mouth to engulf the krill in one big gulp. But sometimes, it also whirls around as it performs this lunge.

"As it opens its mouth it begins to roll over. It's a very energetically costly thing to do ? it's like a parachute opening and the whale slows down considerably," Friedlaender said.

The stealthy strategy may allow whales to anticipate the krills' escape route and adjust before the krill have a chance to cluster together out of reach, he added.

Because one dense krill patch could provide a day's worth of food, it makes sense to perfect their hunting strategies, even if it takes a lot of energy, the researchers write in the journal article.

Whales also turned just before and between dives, suggesting the rotations help the cetaceans scope out the location of prey.

"As in all cetaceans, the eyes are positioned laterally, and thus rolling the body should enhance panoramic vision in multiple dimensions," the researchers write.

Wyandotte Film Festival to Include Troy Filmmaker - Troy, MI Patch

The first-ever Downriver Detroit Underground Festival of Films will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at the James R.?DeSana?Center for Arts & Culture (Wyandotte Arts Center).

Headlining will be the world premiere of three short films written and produced by award-winning local independent filmmaker and Wyandotte police detective Scott Galeski.

Galeski?s production company, Ring of Fire Entertainment, which he co-founded with his brother, Daniel Galeski Jr., is sponsoring the festival. The Ring of Fire films debuting will be Taking Back the City, Bone Yard and Whiskey Tango.

Several other independent filmmakers from the metropolitan Detroit area have been invited to show their short films, as well, including Blake O. Kleiner of Troy.?The run time of each will be between five and 25 minutes.

After each film, Galeski said, the director and cast will come on stage and the audience will have a chance to ask questions and correspond with those involved.

Among the many films will be Spill Baby Spill by Bryan D. Hopkins of Riverview and Nutshell by Daniel D. Smith of Woodhaven.

About a year ago, Galeski held a world premiere party at the same Wyandotte venue for the short film The Tank II. In 2010, he held premieres for The Tank and Protangeline at the Trenton Village Theater.

Each film has gone on to win multiple awards on the independent film circuit, being shown in cities such as Royal Oak, Birmingham, Port Huron and Detroit.

Despite his success in other areas, Galeski said, he wants to maintain a strong connection to the Downriver area every step of the way in his filmmaking process.

?We remember where we came from,? he said. ?We always want to premiere our new stuff here. We want to promote it here. We?re proud to be from Downriver and we want to keep it here.?

Galeski typically uses local people to act in his films and shoots at many Downriver locations. Wyandotte Municipal Services IT Director David Fuller has appeared in both Tank movies, while The Rockery, Do Hickeys and the Wyandotte Police Station have all been used as filming locations.

Galeski?s first feature-length movie,?Pookerland, is currently in postproduction and is tentatively scheduled for a 2013 premiere in either late spring or early summer, he said. The movie will feature legendary Detroit rock and roll star Mitch Ryder.

Tickets for Saturday?s festival are $10 and are available by emailing?rofe1@yahoo.com. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m.

Here is a full list of the short films that will be shown Saturday night:

  • Castaways (trailer), directed by Randell Hutchison of Detroit.

So what does describing themselves as ?The Shield? mean, exactly? Ambrose led viewers to believe it represents his cohorts? attempt to protect WWE from injustice. (WATCH) The new label will ultimately be defined, though, by the WWE Universe through the insurgents? actions in the weeks to come.

Certain everyday terms can take on a different definition when they?re uttered in close proximity to the squared circle. From the name of The Grandest Stage of Them All to an infamous taunt by ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin, take a look at how five key words took on a whole new meaning in WWE.

Fla. man sues ex-Elmo puppeteer, claims NY abuse

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Florida man on Tuesday sued a former Elmo puppeteer who resigned amid sex abuse allegations, saying the voice actor met him in New York a dozen years ago after trolling gay telephone chat lines seeking underage boys for sex.

The lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages, was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by a man who remains anonymous, making him the third person to make claims against Kevin Clash, who resigned from "Sesame Street" last week after 28 years.

Clash had quickly denied the first claim, which was recanted the next day. But Clash then resigned after a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued him for $5 million, saying the actor engaged in sexual behavior with him when he was 15.

According to the latest lawsuit, a 29-year-old man said he met Clash on a chat line when he was 16 and was exploring modeling opportunities in New York. It said the youth, then in high school, specifically stated on the chat line that his intentions were non-sexual. Still, the lawsuit said, Clash pursued, posing as a 30-year-old man whose name was Craig even though he was a decade older.

After speaking by phone for several days, Clash invited the youth to visit his Manhattan apartment, the lawsuit said.

At the apartment, Clash gave the teenager alcohol, and they engaged in sexual contact, including oral sex, the lawsuit said. While in the apartment, the youth spotted numerous Elmo dolls and photographs of Elmo with famous people such as Beyonce and Tyra Banks but didn't learn Clash's history until he moved to New York after high school at age 18 and engaged in a sexual relationship with him, the lawsuit said.

The youth was a compliant victim and did not become aware he had suffered adverse psychological and emotional effects from the sexual acts until this year, the lawsuit said.

Clash's lawyer, Michael Berger, said in a statement that the federal cases filed against Clash are without merit.

"The cases and Mr. Clash's reputation will be defended vigorously," he said.

Autumn sets in rapidly on Saturn's giant moon

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? As leaves fall and winter approaches in Earth's Northern Hemisphere, a change of seasons is also rapidly becoming noticeable in the southern hemisphere of Saturn's giant moon, Titan.

Thanks to NASA's Cassini spacecraft which has been orbiting Saturn since 2004, scientists have been able to observe for the first time ever the seasonal atmospheric circulation direction change on Titan -- an event which only happens once every 15 years and is never observable from Earth. Their findings are published today in Nature.

Titan, while technically only a moon, is bigger than the planet Mercury, and is often considered a planet in its own right. It is the only known moon to have a significant atmosphere and is one of only four terrestrial atmospheres in our Solar System (the other three being Earth, Venus, and Mars). As Titan's rotation axis is tilted by a similar amount to that of Earth, it experiences seasons in a similar way, but at a much more relaxed pace as Saturn takes 29.5 Earth years to orbit the Sun.

Dr Nick Teanby of the University of Bristol and colleagues used infrared spectra measured by Cassini's Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) instrument to determine atmospheric temperature and global distributions of chemical tracers. This allowed them to map out the seasonal changes in great detail.

The team observed an enormous increase in Titan's exotic trace gases over the south pole within a relatively short time. These trace gases are produced high in Titan's atmosphere, where sunlight and highly energetic particles break down nitrogen and methane and recombine to form a vast array of more complex molecules like benzene and hydrogen cyanide.

Co-author, Dr Remco de Kok of SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research said: "We were waiting for signs that the trace gas abundances would change together with the new season, but we did not expect such a large and rapid change: some gas concentrations increased more than a thousand times within only a few months. Also surprising was that this was happening at altitudes above 450 km, much higher than initially anticipated."

At these high altitudes the atmosphere goes around the planet much faster than the rotation of Titan's solid surface and can have horizontal wind speeds around the planet of up to 200m/s (450mph). Vertical winds caused by the seasonally varying hemisphere to hemisphere atmospheric circulation are much slower at a rather sluggish few millimetres per second and are hard to measure using conventional means.

Lead author, Dr Nick Teanby of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences said: "Using measurements of temperature and chemical tracers by Cassini, we were able to observe changes in the subtle vertical winds and reveal the pole-to-pole circulation cell. For the first time ever, we observed the circulation cell direction reverse over the south pole around the time of the 2009 southern autumnal equinox. The resulting distribution of gases shows that the circulation must extend much further than previously thought to 600 km or even higher. This calls into question our current understanding of how Titan's atmosphere works and suggests new avenues to explore."

"Our results provide a powerful new constraint for atmospheric models of Titan. Titan provides a natural laboratory for an Earth-like atmosphere in the cold outer solar system. So, these results could eventually lead to a more complete understanding of atmospheric processes on Earth, other Solar System planets, and the many exoplanetary systems now being discovered."

In the coming years Cassini will continue to observe how the seasons develop. Dr Conor Nixon at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre said: "These results are giving us the first detailed look at changes occurring in Titan's atmosphere around the time of equinox, a season which has not been viewed up close by a spacecraft previously. This shows the really great science that is coming out of the Cassini extended mission phases since 2008, and we look forward to seeing the further changes that will occur over the next five years until the end of mission in 2017."

Wikileaks GI to argue his detention merits release

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? An Army private charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history is trying to avoid trial by claiming he was already punished enough when he was locked up alone in a small cell and forced to sleep naked for several nights.

Pfc. Bradley Manning was expected to testify about his treatment during a pretrial hearing set to begin Tuesday and run through Sunday in a military court at Fort Meade, outside Baltimore. Military officers were expected to testify first, so Manning may not be called to testify until later this week.

Manning's lawyers contend he was illegally punished by being locked up alone in a small cell for nearly nine months at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., and having to sleep naked for several nights.

Military judges can dismiss all charges if pretrial punishment is particularly egregious, but that rarely happens. The usual remedy is credit at sentencing for time served, said Lisa M. Windsor, a retired Army colonel and former Army judge advocate now in private practice in Washington.

In a 1956 case, U.S. v. Bayhand, a military appeals court ordered all charges dismissed against a soldier who had been forced during his pretrial confinement to do hard labor alongside a sentenced prisoner. The court ruled that the soldier had been given an illegal order.

Since then, there have been few, if any, cases in which pretrial punishment has led to dismissal of all charges. Lt. Col. Eric Carpenter, chairman of the criminal law department at the judge advocates school in Charlottesville, Va., said he couldn't find one but he couldn't say for sure that the remedy hasn't been granted.

Manning has also offered to take responsibility for the leak by pleading guilty to reduced charges. The military judge hasn't yet ruled on the offer and prosecutors have not said whether they would still pursue the charges against him.

He was kept at the Marine Corps brig from July 2010 to April 2011. The military contends the treatment at Quantico was proper, given Manning's classification as a maximum-security detainee who posed a risk of injury to himself or others. He was later moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he was re-evaluated and given a medium-security classification.

A United Nations investigator called the conditions of Manning's time at Quantico cruel, inhuman and degrading, but stopped short of calling it torture.

Outside Fort Meade, about two dozen people gathered in the rain and under umbrellas to show support for Manning. Some held a banner that said, "Support Bradley Manning."

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., faces possible life imprisonment if convicted of aiding the enemy, the most serious of the 22 charges.

He is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks while he was working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Economic Impact Of Startup Accelerators: $1.6B+ Raised, 4,800+ Jobs Created, 2,000 Startups Funded

startup-seed-funding-300x200Today, there seem to be more business accelerators than there are startups to fill their classes and cohorts. It seems that not a week goes by without the launch of another accelerator or seed starter fund. In fact, as Peter Relan said in a recent post (riffing on Chris Dixon), accelerators have become an industry segment in their own right. He also goes so far as to surmise that -- just as it is for startups -- 90 percent of accelerators are likely to fail.

First gas tanker crosses Arctic

A large tanker carrying liquified natural gas (LNG) is set to become the first ship of its type to sail across the Arctic.

The carrier, Ob River, left Norway in November and has sailed north of Russia on its way to Japan.

The specially equipped tanker is due to arrive in early December and will shave 20 days off the regular journey.

The owners say that changing climate conditions and a volatile gas market make the Arctic transit profitable.

Long-term preparation

Built in 2007 with a strengthened hull, the Ob River can carry up to 150,000 cubic metres of gas. The tanker was loaded with LNG at Hammerfest in the north of Norway on 7 November and set sail across the Barents Sea. It has been accompanied by a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker for much of its voyage.

You are able to reach a highly profitable market by saving forty percent of the distance, that's forty percent less fuel used as well?

End Quote Tony Lauritzen Dynagas

The ship, with an international crew of 40, has been chartered from its Greek owners Dynagas by the Russian Gazprom energy giant. It says it has been preparing for the trip for over a year.

"It's an extraordinarily interesting adventure," Tony Lauritzen, commercial director at Dynagas, told BBC News.

"The people on board have been seeing polar bears on the route. We've had the plans for a long time and everything has gone well."

Mr Lauritzen says that a key factor in the decision to use the northern route was the recent scientific record on melting in the Arctic.

"We have studied lots of observation data - there is an observable trend that the ice conditions are becoming more and more favourable for transiting this route. You are able to reach a highly profitable market by saving 40% of the distance, that's 40% less fuel used as well."

Shale of the century

But melting ice is not the only factor. A major element is the emergence of shale gas in the US.

The Norwegian LNG plant at Hammerfest was developed with exports to the US in mind. But the rapid uptake of shale in America has curbed the demand for imported gas.

Meanwhile in Japan, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, there has been a growing interest in alternative power sources, especially gas.

"The major point about gas is that it now goes east and not west," says Gunnar Sander, senior adviser at the Norwegian Polar Institute and an expert on how climate change impacts economic activity in the Arctic.

"The shale gas revolution has turned the market upside down; that plus the rapid melting of the polar ice."

He stresses that the changes in climate are less important than the growing demand for oil and gas.

"The major driver is the export of resources from the Arctic region, not the fact that you can transit across the Arctic sea."

There is an expectation that because of changing climactic conditions, sea traffic across the northern sea route will increase rapidly. 2012 has been a record year both for the length of the sailing season and also for the amount of cargo that has been shipped.

But Gunnar Sander says there are limits to the growth and some perspective is required.

"Nineteen thousand ships went through the Suez canal last year; around 40 went through the northern sea route. There's a huge difference."

Dot Earth Blog: Urban Coastlines and Rising Seas

[Production note: I'm helping my older son relocate to New Orleans (22 hours of driving) so comment moderation and posting will be unavoidably sporadic for a few days.]

The Sunday Review has a thought-provoking trio of Op-Ed pieces on the drivers and implications of coastal losses in a warming world with crowded shores. See the links below, but also be sure to click here for an excellent interactive ?what if? graphic charting the changed geography of a host of American cities as sea levels rise:

?Is This the End??

?Rising Seas, Vanishing Coastlines?

?Paying for Future Catastrophes?

There?s much to ponder, but I only have time for one comment:

The third piece, focused on insurance and federal disaster policy, is wise to propose ?a?presidential commission tasked with redesigning our national disaster financing strategy.? But its inclusion of ?food stamp? style discounts for poor people in vulnerable regions side-steps the need to pair such policies with long-term initiatives aimed at shifting settlement patterns altogether.

Small Business Saturday Encourages Local Shopping For Holidays ...

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ? Right in the middle of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday, a national push to get more customers to shop at local small businesses.

?A lot of people walking around,? said Steven Pera, PeraDice Cards & Gifts. ?We couldn?t be happier.?

Small Business Saturday appears to be working fabulously in midtown Sacramento. Shoppers are buying in on the idea.

?It keeps them alive,? shopper Marci Ashley said.

Thousands of small shops and stores across the country took part in the event, offering discounts and other extras as they encouraged people to shop small, rather than at big box stores.

?The big boxes are nice; but smaller stores, you get a lot of variety and things coming in, and I think it feeds downtown real well,? said Ashley.

Across the country, local stores were getting in on the shopping frenzy. They offered unique items to help neighbors keep their jobs by keeping the money close to home.

Many Sacramento merchants are using social media to reach their target shoppers.

?It gets people engaged, gets them through the door,? said Pera.

So how did Small Business Saturday fair in the Central Valley?

?It?s a little too early to tell at this point, but always got to be optimistic,? small business owner Leuren Lundsten said. ?We?re hoping we?re more important to them than Walmart.?

More than 500,000 small businesses across the country are participating.

Entrepreneurship in Decline? | US Daily Review

By US Daily Review.

High levels of economic uncertainty are affecting business and shifting opinions among mid-market executives, according to findings in Deloitte?s?Mid-market perspectives: America?s economic engine- why entrepreneurs matter. Specifically, only 59 percent of executives surveyed ranked?the United States?as the most accommodating country for entrepreneurs ? a 32 percent drop from how those same executives said they felt in past years.

Moreover, while 35 percent of mid-market executives claim their own organization has grown more entrepreneurial, 15 percent state their company is less entrepreneurial, despite the clear benefits in terms of greater productivity and profit margins. Among respondents who did not choose the U.S. as the most attractive environment for entrepreneurs, 42 percent selected?China, followed by?India?(26 percent),?Brazil?(21 percent) and?Australia?(18 percent) as most accommodating.

?Mid-market companies are the growth engine of the U.S. and entrepreneurship is critical to their success,? said?Tom McGee, national managing partner of Deloitte Growth Enterprise Services, Deloitte LLP. ?The good news is that entrepreneurialism exists everywhere and all of the factors cited as inhibiting it can be addressed.?

Entrepreneurial Behavior

In defining ?entrepreneurial,? 81 percent of respondents say any company, large or small, can behave in entrepreneurial ways. Mid-market executives say that being creative, unique, different, innovative and taking risks with the acceptance of failure are most important for keeping their companies successful.

Among mid-market executives who indicated their companies had become more entrepreneurial, they cited innovation to create entirely new businesses, enhancing products and services, and discovering and penetrating new markets as primary behaviors driving their organizations.

Mid-market executives citing a decline in entrepreneurialism attributed it to C-suite leaders? desire to be risk-averse (36 percent) while 17 percent expressed their desire to avoid volatility by sticking to tried and true business practices.

Entrepreneurialism as a Catalyst for Growth

Overall, the survey shows entrepreneurial companies are succeeding at a faster pace in the marketplace.

Compared to all survey respondents, those who identified their companies as more entrepreneurial are more likely to have:

  • Increased capital investment (38 percent).
  • Experienced greater worker productivity (59 percent) and generated higher profit margins (49 percent).
  • Nearly one-third (30 percent) of mid-market executives were more likely to cite ongoing investment in technology and people as a driver of success.

The Bigger Economic Picture

Companies that have become more entrepreneurial are likely to have increased their workforce by more than 10 percent during the past year, and plan for the same in the year to come. Additionally, this segment of survey respondents expects their revenue to grow by more than 10 percent next year.

Uncertainty, however, has not diminished. In fact, the survey shows consistent increases in the level of uncertainty, particularly in an election year in which fiscal policy, taxes and regulation hang in the balance.

Research Methodology

In?September 2012, a Deloitte survey conducted by OnResearch, a market research firm, polled 652 executives at U.S. mid-sized companies about their views on the economy overall, with an added focus on how, or if, entrepreneurial behavior had an impact on their company?s operations. Respondents were limited to senior executives at companies with annual revenues of between?$10 million and $1 billion.

Eighty percent of the companies represented in this survey were privately held; 42 percent of the respondents were owners, board members, or C-suite executives.

(AP) ? Lindsey Vonn overcame an error and exhaustion in her return to World Cup racing after missing time with an intestinal illness that landed her in the hospital.

The four-time overall champion finished the first run of the giant slalom Saturday in 10th place and trails leader Tina Maze of Slovenia by 1.95 seconds heading into the second run. Maze won the season opening GS race last month.

Vonn nearly made a costly mistake on the challenging course, but managed to recover. It required all the energy a weakened Vonn had left, causing her to lose time through the last 10 gates. Vonn recently returned to training after being hit by the stomach bug.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany hit a gate, bruising her upper left arm and ending her day.

Boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho remains on life support

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Relatives of Hector "Macho" Camacho are still hoping for a miracle but planning funeral arrangements for the three-time world boxing champ, Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia said on Friday.

Camacho, 50, remained on life support at the Rio Piedras Medical Center in San Juan. He was declared brain dead on Thursday, two days after he was shot in the face in a drive-by shooting.

The newspaper quoted his former manager, Ismael Leandry, as saying Camacho's family would not remove him from life support before Saturday.

"They won't take him off the machines. God says when he will die," Leandry told the newspaper. "Camacho is a warrior and we believe he is battling to stay alive."

At the same time, the newspaper said the family is planning a funeral in New York, where Camacho grew up, and possibly a public wake in Puerto Rico.

Police were still investigating the shooting. Two gunmen opened fire on Camacho and a friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, 49, as they sat in a car outside a liquor store in the San Juan suburb of Bayamon, Camacho's birthplace.

Mojica Moreno, the driver of the car, was killed and Camacho was shot in the jaw. The bullet fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder, damaging the arteries that carried blood to the brain, doctors said.

Police found nine small bags of cocaine in the driver's pockets and one open in the car. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Camacho, a left-handed fighter who grew up in New York's tough Spanish Harlem, had a record of 79-6-3 with 38 knockouts. His three-decade career featured fights with a "who's who" of boxing and a flamboyant style that included entering the ring in an outfit based on the Puerto Rican flag.

Muscle powers spearing mantis shrimp attacks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? A hungry mantis shrimp may be the last thing that a passing fish sees before it is snatched from the water by the predator. Maya deVries from the University of California, Berkeley, says 'Spearer mantis shrimps stay in their sandy burrows and they wait for a fast-moving prey item to come by, but then they come out of nowhere and grab the prey with their long skinny appendages.' However, little was know about how these vicious predators unleash their lightning-fast attacks.

According to deVries, the spearing shrimp are closely related to smasher mantis shrimps, which pulverise the shells of crustaceans and molluscs with a single explosive blow from their mighty claws. Having decided to find out how the crustaceans unleash their deadly assaults, deVries says, 'We thought that the spearers would be just as fast -- if not faster -- than the smashers because they have a smaller time window in which to capture their prey.' deVries and her colleagues publish their discovery that Lysiosquillina maculata spearer mantis shrimps power their mighty spears with muscle alone while smaller Alachosquilla vicina spearer mantis shrimps use a more conventional catapult mechanism in The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Working with her PhD advisor, Sheila Patek, deVries took a short trip along the corridor to Roy Caldwell's lab to film some of his L. maculata mantis shrimps. Coaxing the nocturnal lobster-sized crustaceans to assault frozen prawns, deVries recalls that the animals were reluctant to attack; 'They probably didn't like the bright lights', she says. However, when the duo analysed the speed of the strikes, they were surprised that the spearer's harpoon speed was much slower than that of their smashing cousin's. Explaining that smashers can unleash strikes at speeds ranging from 10 to 23m/s, the duo were taken aback that L. maculata could only muster 2 m/s.

Smasher mantis shrimp store catapult energy in skeletal springs that they unleash during a deadly assault; therefore deVries analysed the trajectories of several L. maculata claws in action, and realised that the hefty crustaceans were not using the same mechanism. 'The spear has all the same components [as the smashers]', explains deVries, but she adds that the shape of some of the structures are subtly different and the spring did not deform to store energy prior to an attack -- possibly because it is too stiff -- preventing L. maculata from firing a ballistic attack. 'If the L. maculata movement is similar to other ambush predators that have muscle-driven strikes, it is possible that these guys are creating strikes with muscle movement', says deVries.

Next, deVries and Patek tested the reactions of another, smaller mantis shrimp, Alachosquilla vicina, to find out whether all spearing mantis shrimps have opted for muscle-powered strikes. Elizabeth Murphy filmed the animals snapping up brine shrimp however, it was obvious that the diminutive crustaceans were using a spring-loaded catapult to spear their nimble prey. The team could clearly see energy-storing deformations in the spring structure before the mantis shrimp unfurled their deadly assaults at 6m/s.

But the team were still puzzled by L. maculata's sluggish performance. Maybe the lab-based animals had become too unfit to produce explosive attacks? Traveling to Australia to film L. maculata hunting in the wild, the team were relieved to see that the animals' reactions were well within the range of speeds that they had measured in the lab. Adult L. maculata use muscle-powered attacks all the time.

Having confirmed that it is possible for the large shrimp to produce lightening-fast strikes without using a spring mechanism, deVries says 'We're trying to get more L. maculata in the lab to look at the complete size range in one species to see how the strike scales and to find out if there is a size threshold above which you can't have a spring-loaded strike anymore.'

Deadly La. oil rig fire claims second victim

(Reuters) - One of the men burned last week in an explosion and fire on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico died on Friday of his injuries, an official said, bringing the confirmed death toll from the accident to two.

Avelino Tajonera, 49, a welder from the Philippines working on the Black Elk Energy rig, died in a New Orleans hospital on Friday morning, according to a statement from the Philippine Ambassador to the United States. He died shortly after his wife and three children arrived from Manila.

In the wake of the November 16 accident, which killed one other worker and left another missing, U.S. regulators ordered Black Elk to take immediate steps to improve safety at its offshore platforms.

The explosion and fire occurred when workers were welding a pipe on the deck of West Delta Block 32 platform, which sits in 56 feet of water about 17 miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

The accident evoked memories of the deadly 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 people and triggered the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

A spokeswoman for Black Elk did not immediately return an e-mail from Reuters requesting comment.

Ecuador supports raising taxes on bankers to subsidize the poor ...

Ecuador?s Congress on Tuesday approved a government bill that raises taxes on banks to raise about $ 164 million annually, which is used to finance a subsidy to the poor, said the Legislature.

The initiative of the government of Rafael Correa, a candidate for reelection, was endorsed with 79 votes (including several opponents), five against and 10 abstentions after the second and final floor debate, which started in the morning reported Bestgrowthstock.com.

The ?law of redistribution of revenue for social spending? is rejected by the Association of Private Banks (ABPE), which on Tuesday said in a statement to the stock market today that ?affect sector credit expansion, have negative effects on economic growth and the level of employment. ?

But the ruling Francisco Velasco, president of the commission of the Economic System, said during the discussion that even with reform, the bank ?remains an extraordinary business and taking profits guaranteed?.

The text provides a series of levies to fund an increase of 35 to 50 dollars, from January, the Human Development Bond (BDH), a subsidy that benefits created in 1998 to 1.9 million poor.

?Neither 35 nor resolved $ 50 a person?s life,? said Mar?a Paula Romo opposition.

The increase would cost about $ 300 million annually. Correa announced in response to an offer from the banker Guillermo Lasso, his main contender in the race for re-election, who said that reducing government advertising fund, which the president described as ?demagogic?.

So, enshrines a 3% tax on taxable income of financial institutions and a new rate of 0.25% per month on their assets abroad, may be 0.35% if offshore.

Also includes a VAT of 12% for financial services and eliminate a benefit that allows bankers deduct 10% of the income tax by reinvesting profits in productive loans.

It also seeks to cap the salaries of senior bankers, because according to the government, these amounts conceal profits, and increase access to information authorities bank customers.

?You can not fund a fixed cost to a variable income,? questioned the opposition Kl?ver Jimenez.

The profits of the 26 members of the ABPE rose 50.6% in 2011, reaching $ 393 million.

Correa, who leads the voting intentions widely, says that during his government will continue socializing the losses, not the gains, as according to him, occurred during the banking crisis of the late nineties, which led to the dollarization of the economy.

Man charged in slayings of Brooklyn shopkeepers

AP

A 2001 photo of Salvatore Perrone provided by the Franconia Township Police Department.

By NBCNewYork.com and The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- A man suspected of killing three Brooklyn shopkeepers has been charged after he made statements implicating himself and after forensic investigators linked him to the murder scenes, authorities announced Wednesday.?

Salvatore Perrone, 63, was charged with three counts of murder Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.?

Responding to a tip call, authorities picked up Perrone in Bay Ridge Tuesday while looking to question a person they called "John Doe Duffel Bag," the?balding man with a mustache who was seen on surveillance video?near the scene of the latest slaying and who was linked to a video in an earlier incident.?

Police had been investigating the series of deadly shootings?of Brooklyn business owners of Middle Eastern descent since the first one occurred in July.?

Law enforcement sources say Perrone made statements placing himself near the scene of the shooting at the?Valentino Fashion Inc.?in Bay Ridge on July 6.??Mohamed Gebeli, 65, an Egyptian immigrant and a Muslim, was found shot in the back of his shop. Detectives found .22-caliber gun shell casings at that crime scene and also at the scene where?Isaac Kadare, 59, also Egyptian but Jewish, was shot in the head in his Amazing 99 Cent Deal store Aug. 6.

The latest victim, 78-year-old?Rahmatollah Vahidipour, a Jewish man from Iran, was killed in his women's clothing boutique on Flatbush Avenue Friday. The same casings were found at that scene.?

"It's reasonable to assume he was going to continue doing this," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said?in a news conference Wednesday. "He went to other locations and asked questions that indicated he may have been planning to come back.

A law enforcement official said a Ruger rifle with a sawed-off stock and an improvised combination laser/light attached to its barrel was found early Wednesday in a duffel bag at Perrone's girlfriend's Brooklyn home. ?Also contained in the bag were 30 copper-coated hollow-point bullets, latex gloves, women's clothing, a 12-inch steak knife with a substance that may be blood, a fabric color chart and black plastic bags with a substance that may be blood on it, the source said.

Authorities say it is the same duffel bag seen in the surveillance video at the scene of two slayings. The weapon uses .22 ammunition consistent with ballistics found at each of the three crime scenes connected to the case, law enforcement sources said.

Authorities also found .22-caliber ammunition, three knives, one of which appeared to have blood on it, black gloves and women's pantyhose with the legs cut off in the duffel bag, a law enforcement official said. The blood on the recovered knife is being tested for DNA evidence.

Law enforcement sources say Perrone's girlfriend and ex-wife are cooperating with detectives. Sources say he is a fabric and garment salesman, and has several prior arrests, including for stalking and burglary, in Pennsylvania.?

A woman who lived across the street from Perrone's former home on Staten Island said the divorced father of one was a peculiar neighbor and that he used to sing opera loudly from his front yard at odd hours of the night.

"He was just that crazy neighbor," said Julia Marra, 21, who nevertheless viewed Perrone as harmless.

It appeared Perrone was trying to sell his home on the corner of Clove Road and Beverly Avenue on Staten Island. The structure was visibly in disrepair and in need of rehabilitation Wednesday. A phone number listed on the for sale sign in the yard connected to a voice mailbox belonging to Perrone.?

Detectives who specialize in hate crimes and FBI analysts who specialize in behavioral analysis joined the case this week, authorities said.

"The possibility of a bias motive here is something that can't be excluded," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Monday.

The bodies were all partially obscured by clothing or, in one case, a box. The shops all lacked surveillance cameras, and the owners were alone in the store. The locations of the shops are each about 4 miles apart, with addresses that contain the number eight. Money was taken from everyone but Vahidipour, who had $171 in his pocket.

Kelly said it's reasonable to think the shooter had canvassed the area to find locations where no cameras existed.?"Here you have three stores where the proprietor is there by himself, no cameras in any of these," he said. "You'd have to speculate that some sort of reconnaissance was going on before the murders took place."

New York sues Credit Suisse over mortgage securities

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman brought a lawsuit on Tuesday accusing Credit Suisse Group AG of deceiving investors in mortgage-backed securities.

Credit Suisse, Switzerland's second-largest bank, misrepresented the quality of loans underlying residential mortgage-backed securities it sponsored and underwrote in 2006 and 2007, leading to $11.2 billion in losses to investors, according to the lawsuit.

The Zurich-based bank was aware of problems with the loans it bought, the lawsuit said, but rewarded quantity over quality, to the dismay of some Credit Suisse staffers.

Credit Suisse encouraged loan originators "to continue delivering ... crap," the lawsuit said, quoting one bank trader.

The bank failed to adequately evaluate the loans and ignored defects its limited review did uncover, the lawsuit said. It also allegedly failed to perform due diligence it promised. The case was brought under a New York securities fraud statute known as the Martin Act.

Credit Suisse said it rejected the complaint and looked forward to presenting its defense in court. The complaint "recycles baseless claims from private lawsuits and uses an inaccurate and exaggerated number," the bank said in a statement, apparently referring to the $11.2 billion loss figure.

The bank announced a management shake-up on Tuesday.

The action is the latest out of a joint federal-state working group created by President Barack Obama to go after wrongdoing that led to the 2008 financial crisis.

It "marks another significant step in our efforts to hold financial institutions accountable for the misconduct that led to the worst financial crisis in nearly a century," Schneiderman said in a statement. He is co-chair of the group.

On Friday, Credit Suisse agreed to pay $120 million to settle U.S. civil charges that it misled investors in the sale of risky mortgage bonds prior to the crisis. JPMorgan Chase & Co , in a separate but similar case, agreed to pay $296.9 million. The banks settled without admitting wrongdoing.

Schneiderman also brought a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase last month over mortgage-backed securities packaged and sold by Bear Stearns & Co, which JPMorgan acquired during the financial crisis.

The working group's actions are viewed as a last shot for the government to hold banks and others responsible for misconduct in the run-up to the mortgage meltdown.

Credit Suisse, JPMorgan and other banks have already been sued by pension funds, insurers and others who claim they misrepresented the quality of mortgages underlying securities.

Schneiderman said on a telephone press conference Tuesday that the government lawsuits focus on systemic conduct, not individual transactions.

He also said his aim "to protect the market" made the lawsuit different than relief sought by private litigants.

The lawsuit seeks damages and restitution for investor losses, and to stop the conduct.
